Yes if you sold 100 in premium per straddle at a strike of 100, you can make money in the range 0<x<200. Generally the market will price the at the money straddle such that there is a 68% probability that the stock will close within the range implied by the straddle premium.

>Why 2100?

The at the money straddles are $2100, others more. Given AAPL's historical price movements, prevailing market volatility, upcoming news, etc. The market is pricing in a +/-$21 move in AAPL from now to march expiration.

>> No.139359

For the quick and dirty method, how did he get 30.58? Could you write the full equation, those are a lot easier for me to understand, sorry for being retarded.
>>139297
I still don't understand. Like I said above, I'm pretty retarded and just getting in to this.

You say the at the money straddles are 2100, but what does it mean "At the money". Also, where did you come up with +/-21?

You are also extremely helpful like the other guy, if you want me to stop asking questions I will, I just really want to get in to stocks, so I try to learn about them as much as I can.

>> No.139421

>>139359

>but what does it mean "At the money"

Each option has a strike price associated with it. Suppose a stock has options listed in $5 increments and the stock is trading at $131. Then the $130 strike options will be "at the money" meaning they are nearest to the current price of the stock.

>Also, where did you come up with +/-21?
>You say the at the money straddles are 2100

Options represent 100 shares of the underlying stock. So a $21 option = $2100. Straddles are sensitive to distance from the strike not the direction which creates a +/-$21 range for a $21 straddle.

>> No.139455

>>139421
So if it's between 125 or 135 it's considered "At the money"?
And distance from the strike not the direction, what does that mean?

Maybe I'm not cut out for this, I want to get in to stocks but these seem like very complicated methods, perhaps I should start just doing simple trades and work my way up?

>> No.139506

>>139455

>So if it's between 125 or 135 it's considered "At the money"?

More like 127.5 to 132.5.

>And distance from the strike not the direction, what does that mean?

A straddle is short both a put and a call so it loses money whenever the market moves away from the strike price.

>Maybe I'm not cut out for this, I want to get in to stocks but these seem like very complicated methods, perhaps I should start just doing simple trades and work my way up?

>Maybe I'm not cut out for this, I want to get in to stocks but these seem like very complicated methods, perhaps I should start just doing simple trades and work my way up?

>> No.139578

>>139542

A call option gives the buyer(of the option) to buy the underlying stock at a given price, called the strike price by a given date, the expiration date.

So a March 500 AAPL call will give the buyer of the option the right to buy 100 shares of AAPL at $500 per share by March expiration.

Puts give the buyer(of the option) the right to sell at the strike by that date.

If AAPL is trading at $505 per share then the $500 strike calls will have $5 of "intrinsic value" because the buyer can exercise the calls and buy the stock for $500 then sell it on the market at $505 making $5. But since options represent 100 shares of stock, an option quoted at $5 is actually worth $500.

There is also an "extrinsic value" component to option values. If AAPL is trading at $505 there is a chance it will keep moving up. Which means the call can gain even more value. The amount of extrinsic premium is determined by the market's estimate of how far the stock will move.

>> No.139591

>>139578

If the market expects a large move there will be a large amount of extrinsic value. So an option with $5 of intrinsic value might trade for $10.

If the market expects a small move an option of $5 intrinsic value might trade for say $6.

The market's expectation of the size of the move is called the "implied volatility" or IV.

>And a put allows your to sell between the time you buy the stock and the expiration date, correct?

Yes.

>And what do you mean by of the option, just the option to buy the stock, or option as in a different term?

The contract hat you are buying is called an option contract because it gives you the option to buy or sell the underlying. If you don't want to exercise the option you don't have to.
