When I was serving anyone with 7 stripes was making 100k plus contracting. I'm sure that has changed now as the wars are winding down and there is probably a glut of old sf guys. You should probably check out how the market is doing, maybe go to a military forum and ask around. Don't belie anything the reciter tells you. It will take you some years to get those stripes so anything could change in that time frame. Alternatively go the officer route which will be even harder, but would give you more opportunities.

About their invention

nnlx is working on technology of rapid diagnostics and is doing some work with the us govt on anthrax and water quality tseting. They also have new petri dish tech that seems to last forever at room temperatures with various agars. that could be huge becasue there is no long lasting petri dish in the market they all have to be used right away and carefully stored or poured on site.
