If staking isn't profitable, then Link as a whole will fail though. Because Link wont even run if no one is staking Link in the network as collateral for the smart contracts. I think Sergey intends staking to be as profitable as possible. I can't remember where I heard it. But I did hear a rumor that he intends to double the payouts in the first few months just to encourage early adopters to stake as much as possible to get the network to be as large and as decentralized as possible.
