Investing in the market portfolio won't allow you to beat the market, obviously. But a passive strategy is the best way for probably 90% of the population to invest their money with little effort and little cost. But seriously, yeah, if we're talking a long term buy and hold strategy, the key is just to not sell just because everyone else is selling. You don't have to realize your losses. As long as you're diversified, your portfolio will go up again. You divest as necessary at some point in the hopefully distant future.
