Well, if you analyze just overall trade volume on each sell off during the run up since January, you will see there has been progressively weaker sell activity on each dip. Only one of them had serious mustard behind it (March 22nd red dildo) while the rest have been either weak volume or good volume but overwhelmed but dip buying bulls. Steady rising trend of oil probably also played a role. These are essentially the same reasons I have been long on the S&P since a brief series of shorts in March.

VIX index measures the current 1 month implied volatility, The VIX future that expires May 22nd is the front month, the June one is the second month etc.

If you buy the May contract now you are not betting on the VIX, you are betting on what the VIX will be on May 22nd. You are betting on the future number of 1 month implied volatility. If you buy the June contract you are betting on what the VIX will be on the June expiry.

volatility is both clustering and mean reverting, this means that if the VIX index goes up, the May contract will go up, but less. the june contract will go up less than the may one etc etc. this is due to the mean reverting aspect. In a low volatility environment like we are in the value of the Front month will drop quicker than that of the second month. Shorting the front month and buying the second month means you can capture this effect without having an insane short vol exposure.
