Why? Afaik fake diamonds are impossible to spot with the naked eye. The only way the wife would find out it's a fake is if she went to a jeweler to get it checked. And she would only do that if she's thinking about exit scamming. But if she does find out it's fake, you just say you got scammed. She will feel bad for you and understand that you can't afford another 20k ring. You buy a 5-10k ring and now you "only" saved 10-15k.

Geologist here. There are several tests you can do that can quickly reveal it.
>scratch It with a knife. Diamond will cut the knife a fake will get scratched by the knife. Diamonds are harder than knives.
>breathe on it and fog it. Diamonds will dissipate faster than plastic.
>watch how it crystal shapes are. All minerals are giant Crystals. You should be able to see parts of the crystal formation in a real diamond.
There are like 8 other tests you can do but the knife one is faster and easiest.
