Is it really true that if you have a substantial amount of money to invest, like $20,000, there's no better idea than to just throw it all in the S&P 500?

Yeah enjoy 1% annually if you're lucky meanwhile my shitcoin does 2200%

It was true 10 years ago. Put some in crypto save some on the side and buy stocks when they inevitably crash from this high

This.
There’s more downside than upside in the next 2 years. Wait.

Find the companies you like and purchase them in increments of 1000 month by month. Don't just throw the lump sum on it unless it is a divvy play like based T, BA, or BP

Dollar cost average. If you don’t have the time or inclination to manage your investments, S&P ETF or total stock market ETF are the only long term options. I mean, there’s plenty of options that MIGHT give you better long term returns, but I’m assuming you’re not someone looking to speculate or gamble on shitcoins

>> No.13252283

As others have said, I would be extremely hesitant to dump everything I had into the S&P 500. We've had a 10 year bull run in boomer stocks, you're taking a pretty decent risk jumping in with everything you've got. Yeah yeah you can't time the market, but this one is pretty obvious.

Sure, throw it all into oldmarkets. You will be on suicide watch in 2021 after you get hit by a foam which was covering silica plates on my cryptoship leaving the atmosphere. Have fun.

Yeah bud, buy the most popular US Vanguard ETF. Go all in to minimise brokerage.

You should expect a return of 9-12% yearly.
Personally I invest shares/crypto split 50/50. Shares are a solid long-term investment and I'm confident I will retire comfortably whereas the crypto is a bit of fun, the last week for instance has had me walking around work with a massive hard on.

Newsflash: You can still 1000% (at minimum) if you buy right now then wait 3 years.

Pick an asset allocation or a ratio between stocks and fixed income. Don't go completely 100% into Stocks. Use stocks for growth and fixed income as a ballast if the market drops (and it will).

Stocks -> Total Stock Market Fund or a S&P 500 fund (see VTSAX, VTI, etc.)

Fixed Income -> Tons of options (money markets, bonds, anything liquid FI in the event of a RBD)
