I design data centers and other small data rooms. You do CAD drawings, write specifications, spec out equipment and just deal with bullshit.

Most of it has to do with my salty attitude toward corporate garbage. But it can't be entirely me, because pretty much everyone I know has gotten out of engineering after a few years. A lot of them are in related roles, but no longer do actually engineering because its painfully fucking boring and repetitive.

I've left twice, but have had to go back because I went broke. Hopefully the third time will be the last.

The IT side of it is probably much more interesting than the infrastructure side, but I don't know much about IT stuff.

If you are interested in infrastructure, this white paper pretty much lays everything out. http://www.pueda.ch/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Uptime_Institute_Data_Center_Tier_Classification_5th.pdf

The only recommendation I have for anyone is go into computer programming. It offers the most flexibility of any field I know, while still offering decent pay. But I feel like computer programming might be in a little bit of a bubble now - kind of like the oil jobs were before the bust.

Computer engineering student here. CE isn't like building computers, but, if you want to learn how they work then do CE. Secure job, good pay, respected by other people, you aren't stuck with computers, you will be valuable in other roles like programming (if you learn a few more languages than what college teaches you), finance people like all engineering students, but, especially the "hard" Engineers like CE, EE, ChemE, Aero, etc.

You probably won't learn much about computers in first year other than maybe an intro to Computer science or some intro to programming classes. But, it gets real heavy on the electrical part of Computer Engineering in 3rd and 4th year. It is challenging, but, rewarding.

without a doubt pay for your education over investing. There is 0 chance that you will be able to beat the loans interest rate as well as the compounding interest that you will be subject to if you don't pay it off.

Also, the time saved from being fixated on the markets.

Yes, there is math. I HAVE to take atleast 3 math classes as well as 2 pure physics classes.

Once you learn that math, the math in your electrical classes and other stuff you learn in CE is relatively easy.

If you reckon you could handle the quantitative stuff in CE or any E really, I would recommend you go for it. But, if you can't, go for programming. Not SoftE, if you did SoftE you will be doing math classes as well.

I suggest you learn programming at a programming boot camp if you want to programming. There isn't that much hands on stuff other than circuits and some other things. You will get to do a fair few labs stuff just in the intro physics and engineering units.

Senior CmpE major here. You might want to watch out if you aren't good at math. Depending on where you go math may be intense at times, and with any good program it should. Just know that if you decide to go in that direction. Not that hard work can't overcome it, just know you would have to work at it if your math isn't strong.

IT isn't awful and still related to computers. Every company now has a network and needs people to manage it. A friend of mine, equally as smart as I am and capable of doing the math for CmpE, started out as CS but changed to IT. He works for a consulting company that manages IT services for several businesses.

I'm very analytical and a good public speaker, I get on well with practically every one I meet or work with. I'm not as good as I should be at managing my money, trying to improve.

Turning 21 in 2 weeks and I've been working since I was 15. 2 movie theatre jobs, 1 retail, 3 times a waiter. Currently working as an "engaged life program instructor" and waiter at a Senior independent living community where I'm well liked and teach a history class to the residents once a week.

I'm told a history degree is one of the most flexible.

Follow your passion is just as much a meme as do what you love (unless you are rich)

Knowing people who can employ you > networking and enjoying your youth > developing marketable skills > acquiring a certain qualification.

No serious industry is gonna care if you enter by age 20 or 25 or even 30. Also you will most likely only apply 10% of the stuff you learned, and most jobs will be painfully dull and repetitive.

Graduated with a degree in mining engineering. Couldn't find mining work because I had no co-op experience, had average grades, and graduated at a time when the industry was suffering (2014). It's still suffering, as are my peers - I looked up my graduation cohort on linkedIn and crunched the numbers. 39% of them are employed as engineers, and 31% of them are employed in a mining-related field. Pretty shitty overall, but such is life in a boom-and-bust industry.

My work history since graduation has been pretty checkered. I did civil engineering for 8 months because I wanted to get engineering experience for my P.Eng. I had a reasonable pay rate and it was a great learning experience, I loved my boss, but the work wasn't for me. Now I'm a metallurgical EIT and volunteer at an MIT-accredited Fab Lab. I'm making reasonable money (55k/yr in a low-cost-of-living area), am highly respected by my co-workers, have extremely flexible hours and love the job. All I do is design and improve metal-purifying systems. So far I've managed to create 99.99991% pure indium from 99.99% pure material, and I'm fairly sure that I'll be able to achieve 99.99999% purity in my current production run.

I'm not sure if I'd recommend anybody becoming a mining engineer right now. While the money can be great (my buddy is making six figures, untaxed right now and he's just 23 years old), it's a tough industry to break into and you can't understate how rough looking for work is during a bust in the industry can feel.

On the other hand the metallurgical sciences are actually really fun! If you can get a gig like mine and enjoy learning all day and actually getting to run experiments with an experienced tech to help you out, I'd suggest giving metallurgy or the materials sciences a chance. Maybe I'm a little bit autistic in that I actually enjoy troubleshooting and collecting data, but a lot of you are too. Give it a go if you're looking for a fun career.

To answer your question, it really depends on what you are trying to do. If you are trying to get a job, I would recommend building a portfolio of your work to help you get hired. Also, if you're in school, learn the theoretical stuff(data structures and algorithms) as that is the one advantage you get over self learned programmers. If you are starting out, the language doesn't really matter, but I would say Python, just because it's so easy. Once you learn one language, learning others is much easier.

Is being a history teacher in the US suicide tier? Is it really that saturated? What can I do to improve my portfolio to land a job if I major in history or polysci?

>18
>have 1k saved up (only worked 2 jobs in my life, used to be a stoner but got my shit together and have been sober my last 2 years)
>have a huge passion for political science and history, with no strong political opinions one way or another. I just love dissecting everything. I just learn useless shit in my free time
>worried about college and due to parents financial situation, have to attend community college for 2 yrs first

I don't know what to do. I want to pursue my passion, but I'm also anxious. I'm decently tech-savvy but pretty awful at math. The most I can do is some freelance web developer stuff on the side, but pajeet is kicking my ass right now in that market.

Any suggestions?

Ask yourself these questions:

>would you genuinely, sincerely be happy teaching?
>what's more important to you, time or money?

Only you can answer those questions, but me? I love teaching and I value time over money.

I've got friends making 90,000+ a year, and they work constantly. I'm not even sure they get vacation time, like, at all. And if they do, they're probably still working on their phones, sending emails and shit. Not even sure they like their jobs...

Me? 45k / year but I love what I do and I get 3 months paid vacation every year. You know what I did today? Went to the beach and drank beer. You know what I'm doing tomorrow? It's a hard thing to know because the teaching classes you'll take won't really give you a good idea of what being a teacher is really like. You'll teach someone else's lesson to someone else's students and it will feel really "flat" and unrewarding.

But the ability to get up in front of people and talk, not just talk but instruct and teach and manage, is crucial and if the thought of that gives you anxiety, you might not want to go into teaching.

So my advice would be to take 1 or 2 education classes where you do a little fieldwork and just see if you can do it. After that, imagine having your own class with your own students and being able to do it your way. If that thought appeals to you, maybe you should be a teacher.

I had internships with two companies before graduating but I didn't end up joining either of them. Senior year I just interviewed around couple companies that came to my uni career fair.

>> No.1331462

Hey guys, question. I have an opportunity to intern with northwestern mutual. It's a life insurance/financial advising company.

I just did some research however and apparently the job involves using a personal network at times. I.e., friends and family. I'm not sure this is the career for me. I'm almost done with a management degree which is honestly a pretty bad degree so I'm not sure what else to do because I'm going to be needing a job.

You think it's worth it to try the internship? If anything maybe to de autist myself? I've never been incredibly outgoing or good at sales but I mean even if I don't like the job at all I think it might be a beneficial internship. Is it a good or bad idea?

The rep said that starting pay is on average 55k a year out of school and people who have worked there 10+ years make on average 300k. which sounds like a load of big fucking bullshit. I believe the pay is commission based

>> No.1331469

>>1329805
From what school? Also, did you read flat chemistry or engineering?

>> No.1331487

>>1331462

It's a trap, anon. In all seriousness.

First and foremost, your pay at the beginning (first 3 months at least) is actually just a "loan" from your future commission. So in other words, they aren't actually paying you. You're starting a loan and paying yourself - if you quit, you'll just owe northwestern money. If you don't quit, your future pay will be decreased to pay the company back.

Second, the job is like this. One day one. READ: FIRST DAY. You write the first and last names, email addresses, and phone numbers of 100 people you know. This is almost always (read: always) your closest family and friends, plus some people you met at school, or knew in the past. Teachers, neighbors etc. You sign a document that gives NW the right to own the list.

Then, your job, is basically to sell life insurance to these people - your friends and family. NW calls these "heads." If you do not make any sales or if you quit, NW owns the list and has your permission to work the leads. Your family/friends will be pestered for years completely outside of your control and the "do not call" list does not apply, since the information was "generated by individual research."

Finally, like many things in life, the job is not fair. Do not get me wrong, there have been many people who just busted ass and/or got lucky doing this job and are now very rich after building a book of business, etc. HOWEVER. For 99% of NW's victims, this is a trap not only because of reasons 1 and 2, but also reason 3: Nobody you know wants to buy life insurance. The folks who may actually need/want it already have it - and they got a better deal than NW can offer and all the people around your age do not fucking want/need life insurance. Just think - do YOU want life insurance? lmao no. I'm 28 and I don't want or need it. Additionally, most people have insurance through their work.

>> No.1331500

>>1331462
>>1331487

Finally, most "success stories" find success in one of three ways:

1.) They come from an insurance family. Literally - their dad/mom sells insurance and literally give them leads OR let them have old clients. I overuse literally here to express that you must believe this is the most common way.
2.) The family sympathy purchase. One head on your list will buy it simply to support you. NW banks on this and it's still part of the trap. The one sale will not be enough to support you, however, and you will still likely fail in a few months - but NW does not care. 1 sale for 1 new rep - even out of 1,000 hires is cost effective for them - especially since they're not even paying you.

3.) Working hard, finding a bit of luck, developing your own book of business from scratch. Since this is what all salesmen do, I would recommend finding another industry to do it in.

Good luck anon

You should think long and hard about law school before going into it. I'm serious. It's an enormous commitment and it's not like years ago. I'm not trying to dissuade you, but it's something you need to think about.

Most law school students fail to consider whether they should even become a lawyer at all. Lawyering is nothing -- repeat -- nothing like how you imagine it to be. It's an unbelievable amount of work, stressful work, and IF you even get a job practicing law (see below) you can expect to put in 60 hour weeks that will look something like this:

>taking phone calls from pain in the ass client
>reassure client that you're getting everything together
>work all week long on some complex summary judgement or some shit
>feeling good about it
>come in on Monday and read your emails
>email from opposing counsel yadda yadda you look it over and...oh shit...
>realize that the game has changed completely and all the work you were doing is now useless
>you explain the situation to your client and he wants a reduction on his bill
>he threatens to file a complaint with the bar association and that's the last thing you need
>end up writing off half those hours you worked on that stupid no-longer applicable summary judgement
>time to get to work!......again!

But that's if you can even GET a job. They're graduating like 2 law school students now for every 1 open spot actually practicing. If you don't: a.) Go to a top tier law school, b.) Graduate top of your class, c.) Have awesome connections ... you should probably not even pursue law. It's just the unfortunate reality.

And most of the lawyers you speak to will even tell you straight-up that if they could do it all over again, they wouldn't go into law.

The money *can* be great. The work *can* be rewarding. That shrewd, lawyery swagger and bravado is always fun. But it's just not worth it when you're putting in 60 hours a week, writing off hours here and there, taking calls from asshole clients who think they know better than you and expect you to somehow do the impossible. It's a lot.

I was considering law school for a long time. I love the idea of it but I know the reality would be so much different. I'll live vicariously through those lawyer friends of mine when we go out for drinks. That's enough for me.

In the end, what matters is your skill. Since you are trying to do finance with CS minor, you need a lot of mathematics. You should focus a lot on mathematics, and the finance and CS will become easier. I say that as a math major. It's easier to learn CS from a math background, but its harder to learn math from CS. The math I'm talking about is higher level mathematics, not calculus or before. Stuff like graph theory is helpful for learning data structures for example. You may need to talk to an advisor in school about this, as well as your professors if you are really certain what to do.
