what do you study?
African American studies
video games studies
cock sucking studies
I study cyber security and believe it should be up a tier
>information systemsNot even on the chart. Should I just kill myself /biz/?
I am an electrical engineer. Its the lamest fucking job ever. Do not go into electrical engineering. Boring as fuck. Should be suicide tier.
>>1316576I studied PhilosophyI would definitely agree it's shit-tierMilitary is definitely NOT shit-tier if you do something good. I know someone who's an officer in the Royal Engineers. That's a pretty great job.
>>1316664I'm actually about to do it. What's so boring about it? Don't want to kill myself
>>1316664What do you do in it?
>>1316676>>1316678I design data centers and other small data rooms. You do CAD drawings, write specifications, spec out equipment and just deal with bullshit. Most of it has to do with my salty attitude toward corporate garbage. But it can't be entirely me, because pretty much everyone I know has gotten out of engineering after a few years. A lot of them are in related roles, but no longer do actually engineering because its painfully fucking boring and repetitive. I've left twice, but have had to go back because I went broke. Hopefully the third time will be the last.
>>1316695As I posted earlier, I'm in information systems and have wanted to go into data warehouse design. Am I likely to encounter the same kinds of problems doing that?
>>1316703The IT side of it is probably much more interesting than the infrastructure side, but I don't know much about IT stuff. If you are interested in infrastructure, this white paper pretty much lays everything out. http://www.pueda.ch/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Uptime_Institute_Data_Center_Tier_Classification_5th.pdfThe only recommendation I have for anyone is go into computer programming. It offers the most flexibility of any field I know, while still offering decent pay. But I feel like computer programming might be in a little bit of a bubble now - kind of like the oil jobs were before the bust.
>>1316576>geophysics god>geophysics goodhitting a metal plate with a hammer and measuring velocity is retard-tier
>>1316719Ok, thanks. That seems much more like the physical infrastructure side of things than logical design and requirements analysis, which is where I think my strengths lie.I know everybody's into programming now, but I can't seem to work up any particular enthusiasm for it. I'm studying SQL, Java and Python but to me they're just means to an end rather than something I could see myself doing full time.
CS, first year
>>1316728I hear ya. I started to take one of those udacity programming courses to change fields into programming and got bored with that too. I'm too old to go into programming now.
>>1316734If you know your engineering nuts and bolts but don't want to actually do it, why not go into tech consulting? A friend of mine did EE and is now making bank as a consultant for Telstra (big telecomms company here in Australia).
>>1316744I mentioned almost everyone I know has left engineering - they have left for those types of jobs.I have a super spotty career history now, so my options are limited. Employers hate the excuse "I quit my job to pursue day trading." I won't last much longer doing this shit. I'm about to the point where I would rather make 10 bucks an hour at a pizza shop than do this shit.
>>1316695>>1316719>>1316664Should've gone to grad school, cuck. I'm busy making quantum computers and shit
>>1316757If you enjoy it good for you.
>>1316762Fair enough, if you don't enjoy the field, you don't enjoy the field. But I think writing off EE as the "lamest fucking job ever" is somewhat extreme. It demonstrates that salary/prestige/whatever is no fucking way to choose your career, and I'm sorry it didn't work out for you.My sympathies, anon.
>>1316576I'm finishing med school this year
>>1316768I am very biased I admit. I also have experience in only a portion of the field. But I can't recommend anyone go into a field similar to mine. Quantum computing may be fun. Data center infrastructure is not.Yes, I am very salty.
>Studied anthropology>got job in sales>learned to code and became a marketing consultant.>genuinely enjoy my job and make six figures at the same time>make more then all the cucks my ageCollege major is literally a meme. All you need to do is figure out what you're good at and then use that to make money.
>>1316768>prestigePrestige is such a bullshit normie concept. Can you eat prestige? Can prestige keep me warm or pay off my bills? Do what it takes to make money. If a pornstar makes more money then you, that literally proves that society finds this person more valuable to you. "prestige" is how normies cope with mediocre. "A..at least I'm a doctor! so what If I have to wait ten years before I make money, America despises me and my patients don't trust me. I have prestige!""S...so what If I have 500k worth of student loans I have to pay for law school. I'm a big fancy lawyer now! >>1316838Look here>>1316852This, if you want to invest, see it as a hobby, not as a means of getting wealthy. The wealth part will come later after you become skilled in something.>>1316838>I like working with computers and stuffComputer engineering student here. CE isn't like building computers, but, if you want to learn how they work then do CE. Secure job, good pay, respected by other people, you aren't stuck with computers, you will be valuable in other roles like programming (if you learn a few more languages than what college teaches you), finance people like all engineering students, but, especially the "hard" Engineers like CE, EE, ChemE, Aero, etc.You probably won't learn much about computers in first year other than maybe an intro to Computer science or some intro to programming classes. But, it gets real heavy on the electrical part of Computer Engineering in 3rd and 4th year. It is challenging, but, rewarding.

>>1316576>triple major in 3 God-tiersFeels good

Is there a lot of math when working in CE?I was wondering another thing with the $10k that I just received from the insurance thing, im assuming the best thing rn would be to pay for my education instead of investing, I want to start earning good money im just at a loss figuring out how to do it :/
Got an MA in international relations. The field is riddled with nepotism. I'm working in digital marketing now.
>>1316798>he doesn't understand how a market worksPornstars make money because there aren't that many people willing to degrade themselves on camera. >>1316976without a doubt pay for your education over investing. There is 0 chance that you will be able to beat the loans interest rate as well as the compounding interest that you will be subject to if you don't pay it off. Also, the time saved from being fixated on the markets.Yes, there is math. I HAVE to take atleast 3 math classes as well as 2 pure physics classes.Once you learn that math, the math in your electrical classes and other stuff you learn in CE is relatively easy.If you reckon you could handle the quantitative stuff in CE or any E really, I would recommend you go for it. But, if you can't, go for programming. Not SoftE, if you did SoftE you will be doing math classes as well.I suggest you learn programming at a programming boot camp if you want to programming. There isn't that much hands on stuff other than circuits and some other things. You will get to do a fair few labs stuff just in the intro physics and engineering units.

Economics major here, i genuinely enjoy it, and couldn't see myself studying anything else. But reading /biz/ makes me paranoid since it's considered meme tier here. People irl seem impressed I guess and the stats show its pretty up there for median salary.
Veterinary school, specializing in fish.
Studied business management in a university outside of the top 20.Got loads of offers before I even graduated, now work in a telecommunications company as a sales manager. I earn above the average wage in the country and it's only my second job. Job was Chinese-speaking only which I learned in China when living there for two years. Literally easy mode.Barely tried in the degree, did my dissertation in two days, got a first honours.
2L in law school.

Management consulting is a field that takes people in with any kind of degree, so the consulting you will be doing is the same as the consuting and english major would be doing, do an internet search. and harass your professors about what kind of jobs the other math masters students did after graduation. there are plenty of in the field of operations research. so do some internet research.

>>1316976Senior CmpE major here. You might want to watch out if you aren't good at math. Depending on where you go math may be intense at times, and with any good program it should. Just know that if you decide to go in that direction. Not that hard work can't overcome it, just know you would have to work at it if your math isn't strong.IT isn't awful and still related to computers. Every company now has a network and needs people to manage it. A friend of mine, equally as smart as I am and capable of doing the math for CmpE, started out as CS but changed to IT. He works for a consulting company that manages IT services for several businesses.

Graduated with a degree in mining engineering. Couldn't find mining work because I had no co-op experience, had average grades, and graduated at a time when the industry was suffering (2014). It's still suffering, as are my peers - I looked up my graduation cohort on linkedIn and crunched the numbers. 39% of them are employed as engineers, and 31% of them are employed in a mining-related field. Pretty shitty overall, but such is life in a boom-and-bust industry. My work history since graduation has been pretty checkered. I did civil engineering for 8 months because I wanted to get engineering experience for my P.Eng. I had a reasonable pay rate and it was a great learning experience, I loved my boss, but the work wasn't for me. Now I'm a metallurgical EIT and volunteer at an MIT-accredited Fab Lab. I'm making reasonable money (55k/yr in a low-cost-of-living area), am highly respected by my co-workers, have extremely flexible hours and love the job. All I do is design and improve metal-purifying systems. So far I've managed to create 99.99991% pure indium from 99.99% pure material, and I'm fairly sure that I'll be able to achieve 99.99999% purity in my current production run.
>>1327801con'tI'm not sure if I'd recommend anybody becoming a mining engineer right now. While the money can be great (my buddy is making six figures, untaxed right now and he's just 23 years old), it's a tough industry to break into and you can't understate how rough looking for work is during a bust in the industry can feel.On the other hand the metallurgical sciences are actually really fun! If you can get a gig like mine and enjoy learning all day and actually getting to run experiments with an experienced tech to help you out, I'd suggest giving metallurgy or the materials sciences a chance. Maybe I'm a little bit autistic in that I actually enjoy troubleshooting and collecting data, but a lot of you are too. Give it a go if you're looking for a fun career.
>>1316576About to try to do finance major and computer science minorAnyone know if these disciplines are good for making money? (my preference is to work in field regarding AI trading)
>>1328017Be really good at programming and you will make 6 figures starting. That said, the places where you get 6 figures also happen to be expensive.
>>1328023thanks. do you recommend any particular language?
>>1328036To put more context, my friend got an internship at Etsy which turned into a full time job, so he didn't search at all. He makes 6 figures. He uses the LAMP stack at work. If you really want to make the money, you really need to have the skill and be able to demonstrate it. To answer your question, it really depends on what you are trying to do. If you are trying to get a job, I would recommend building a portfolio of your work to help you get hired. Also, if you're in school, learn the theoretical stuff(data structures and algorithms) as that is the one advantage you get over self learned programmers. If you are starting out, the language doesn't really matter, but I would say Python, just because it's so easy. Once you learn one language, learning others is much easier.

>>1329166How can I tell if I will love teaching? What are the signs I will? What if I have social anxiety?
>>1330414It's a hard thing to know because the teaching classes you'll take won't really give you a good idea of what being a teacher is really like. You'll teach someone else's lesson to someone else's students and it will feel really "flat" and unrewarding. But the ability to get up in front of people and talk, not just talk but instruct and teach and manage, is crucial and if the thought of that gives you anxiety, you might not want to go into teaching. So my advice would be to take 1 or 2 education classes where you do a little fieldwork and just see if you can do it. After that, imagine having your own class with your own students and being able to do it your way. If that thought appeals to you, maybe you should be a teacher.

Hey guys, question. I have an opportunity to intern with northwestern mutual. It's a life insurance/financial advising company.I just did some research however and apparently the job involves using a personal network at times. I.e., friends and family. I'm not sure this is the career for me. I'm almost done with a management degree which is honestly a pretty bad degree so I'm not sure what else to do because I'm going to be needing a job.You think it's worth it to try the internship? If anything maybe to de autist myself? I've never been incredibly outgoing or good at sales but I mean even if I don't like the job at all I think it might be a beneficial internship. Is it a good or bad idea? The rep said that starting pay is on average 55k a year out of school and people who have worked there 10+ years make on average 300k. which sounds like a load of big fucking bullshit. I believe the pay is commission based
>>1329805From what school? Also, did you read flat chemistry or engineering?
>>1331462It's a trap, anon. In all seriousness.First and foremost, your pay at the beginning (first 3 months at least) is actually just a "loan" from your future commission. So in other words, they aren't actually paying you. You're starting a loan and paying yourself - if you quit, you'll just owe northwestern money. If you don't quit, your future pay will be decreased to pay the company back.Second, the job is like this. One day one. READ: FIRST DAY. You write the first and last names, email addresses, and phone numbers of 100 people you know. This is almost always (read: always) your closest family and friends, plus some people you met at school, or knew in the past. Teachers, neighbors etc. You sign a document that gives NW the right to own the list. Then, your job, is basically to sell life insurance to these people - your friends and family. NW calls these "heads." If you do not make any sales or if you quit, NW owns the list and has your permission to work the leads. Your family/friends will be pestered for years completely outside of your control and the "do not call" list does not apply, since the information was "generated by individual research."Finally, like many things in life, the job is not fair. Do not get me wrong, there have been many people who just busted ass and/or got lucky doing this job and are now very rich after building a book of business, etc. HOWEVER. For 99% of NW's victims, this is a trap not only because of reasons 1 and 2, but also reason 3: Nobody you know wants to buy life insurance. The folks who may actually need/want it already have it - and they got a better deal than NW can offer and all the people around your age do not fucking want/need life insurance. Just think - do YOU want life insurance? lmao no. I'm 28 and I don't want or need it. Additionally, most people have insurance through their work.
>>1331462>>1331487Finally, most "success stories" find success in one of three ways:1.) They come from an insurance family. Literally - their dad/mom sells insurance and literally give them leads OR let them have old clients. I overuse literally here to express that you must believe this is the most common way.2.) The family sympathy purchase. One head on your list will buy it simply to support you. NW banks on this and it's still part of the trap. The one sale will not be enough to support you, however, and you will still likely fail in a few months - but NW does not care. 1 sale for 1 new rep - even out of 1,000 hires is cost effective for them - especially since they're not even paying you.3.) Working hard, finding a bit of luck, developing your own book of business from scratch. Since this is what all salesmen do, I would recommend finding another industry to do it in. Good luck anon

>>1317638You should think long and hard about law school before going into it. I'm serious. It's an enormous commitment and it's not like years ago. I'm not trying to dissuade you, but it's something you need to think about. Most law school students fail to consider whether they should even become a lawyer at all. Lawyering is nothing -- repeat -- nothing like how you imagine it to be. It's an unbelievable amount of work, stressful work, and IF you even get a job practicing law (see below) you can expect to put in 60 hour weeks that will look something like this:>taking phone calls from pain in the ass client>reassure client that you're getting everything together>work all week long on some complex summary judgement or some shit>feeling good about it>come in on Monday and read your emails>email from opposing counsel yadda yadda you look it over and...oh shit...>realize that the game has changed completely and all the work you were doing is now useless>you explain the situation to your client and he wants a reduction on his bill>he threatens to file a complaint with the bar association and that's the last thing you need>end up writing off half those hours you worked on that stupid no-longer applicable summary judgement>time to get to work!......again!But that's if you can even GET a job. They're graduating like 2 law school students now for every 1 open spot actually practicing. If you don't: a.) Go to a top tier law school, b.) Graduate top of your class, c.) Have awesome connections ... you should probably not even pursue law. It's just the unfortunate reality.

But it's just not worth it when you're putting in 60 hours a week, writing off hours here and there, taking calls from asshole clients who think they know better than you and expect you to somehow do the impossible. It's a lot.I was considering law school for a long time. I love the idea of it but I know the reality would be so much different. >>1316790What skills do you need to become a marketing consultant?
>>1332249>>1332253I don't think you have a realistic view on AI research. You're gonna need to go to grad school for any employer or uni to take you seriously. It's not a simple subject and is very heavy on math, stat, and cs theory.
Optical Engineer
Mechanical engineering, fuckers. I'm gonna smoke weed on the hyperloop, bitches.
>>1316576Mechanical EngineerYeah I ain't Unbelievable but I have the most potential of all engineers. I can branch out to anything else in the field.Which means it deserves to be the best degree anyone with a brain should get.
>>1316576I don't fucking know - I can't make up my mind. All my life I self studied theology - occultism - history of religions, and now more than ever I have a genuine interest in pure theology, I've self studied most of college material.I'm also capable of getting a profession in programming - but not sure I'll be as happy doing it... really don't know what to do.
>>1332554fuck yeah, how far in are you?
>>1332642Last year. A year of depression fucked up my 4 year goal but im okay with it. My last semester is gonna be amazing with only my Senior Design class being the only Mech class I need. Take 3 other classes and I'm gonna have an easy 12 hour spring.
>>1332661>>1332642Mech Eng PE here, 4 years in industry, 93k. Keep up the hard work, you'll go places.
>>1316576I'd like to go into UX Design but its so hard to know what degree it is on this list. Working with computers, making sweet products, websites, being a "thought leader", making the good vidya getting the nice 70K+ doing it, seems like a good life.
>>1316576God tier physics reporting in
>>1332700>>1332661would an mba be worth it on top?
Nuclear energy here. It's hard as fuck, I don't enjoy it, and I'm not gonna earn lods of emone in my country. At least I am almost guaranteed an employment though.
>>1332741Okay, this is the best advice I got from one of my Professors who basically was there for all of Apollo.Get your Bachelors and then get a job. Don't go straight for your Masters. Why pay for it yourself when you can have your employer pay for it?Its a great trade off of free education with the trade off of you have to grantee work there for whatever years they think is fair for your tuition.
>>1316576Philosophy/History/ReligionI work in finance now. Decent base salary, good commissions. I just wish I had started earlier instead of wasting those years studying that shit. I find it very interesting, but I didn't learn anything I couldn't just find in books on online. I could have been at this point at 23.
Microbio and geneticsCRISPR is bae
>>1332794what exactly do you do in finance that is so interesting?
im a mechanical engineer but im also trained in computer engineeringHow fucked am i
>>1332249In the end, what matters is your skill. Since you are trying to do finance with CS minor, you need a lot of mathematics. You should focus a lot on mathematics, and the finance and CS will become easier. I say that as a math major. It's easier to learn CS from a math background, but its harder to learn math from CS. The math I'm talking about is higher level mathematics, not calculus or before. Stuff like graph theory is helpful for learning data structures for example. You may need to talk to an advisor in school about this, as well as your professors if you are really certain what to do.
