We were sold a line about free trade and cheap goods, and we wanted to believe it because we were all libertarians seven years ago. Now we're seeing what the cost of those cheap goods are. So what is left for the Doomer in a world that has left him behind? What do you do when the natural social order is attacked? When you realize that you can no longer win by taking action, but at the same time, you'll lose by remaining inactive? You become stuck. You become doomed. You're caught in the machinery of global civilization as it bleeds to death, and there's nowhere in the world left to retreat to and no ideology that can save you. All you can do is look at your watch and count down until it all falls apart - and maybe then, when you're with the men among the ruins, you can start again.

Maybe next time, you won't be doomed.
