Last time I was in a stock market game was in grade school, and I won a free trip to some restaurant because I came in first place

The game had a 15 minute lag from the actual market, so I would just check a bunch of stocks at close then compare them to 15 minutes earlier, if it was a good bit higher I'd buy then sell at close

I opened a Roth IRA a few months ago.
So far I've only invested in to mutual funds. I've made like $30 which is kinda cool considering I'm pretty dumb about this.

I want to diversify my portfolio though. I picked mutual funds because of the dividend payments I guess.
What are some other things I should be investing in? There is just so much information to read over it's overwhelming.

I plan to open a traditional IRA once I've contributed ~$5000 to my Roth IRA this year.
Just got hired on with this company and they have nice 401k benefits, so I'll be doing that as well.

My current allocations.

Contribution limits for IRAs count toward all types of IRAs, so this year you would only be able to put in like $500 in a traditional IRA after that 5k in a Roth.

Your allocation to large cap is very small, so you might want to add to that with future contributions.

Put assets with interest or high dividends (like bonds) in your Roth IRA and 401k to avoid/delay paying taxes.

Don't fuss over minor monthly fluctuations like $30. It's likely your funds (and everyone else's) are going to lose quite a chunk once a correction hits within the next year or so, but that doesn't matter either in the long haul. Just hold on and try to contribute more than usual once the market goes down 15-20%+.

>> No.132242

>>132216
I'm not 100% sure on the difference between the allocations. Is there a site that explains them properly?

I didn't realize it counts towards both IRAs. If that's the case, what kind of account would I need to open to keep building my portfolio?

Thanks for the help.

>> No.132348

>>132242
Caps = how big a company is. The majority of the stock market is large caps, so having 10% large cap and 42% small/mid is a huge difference from the market. Maybe 50-50 large/small if you want to tilt toward small.

Just max out your Roth ($5500) and 401k ($17500) if you can, though if you're planning to retire much earlier than your 50s you may want to rethink completely maxing out a 401k. These limits can change yearly. If you make enough money that you're looking for more tax sheltering than $22500 of investments per year, you probably have enough to pay a financial adviser instead of asking random people on 4chan.

That's quite a large cap. I only recently got hired on, but once I am, I'll be making $52k a year. Or around 40k after taxes.

Should I max out my IRA, then just shove the rest of my savings in to the 401k?

These are my 401k benefits. Is this considered good? Fuck being an adult is difficult I have no idea what any of this even means.

>> No.132483

Can someone tell me how the fuck this works.

If I put in $17,500 does that mean I basically have $26,250?

>> No.132524

>>132423
>>132483
No, it's only up to 6% of your pay, but it's pretty much a 50% guaranteed return so make sure you definitely contribute at least 6% of your paycheck to the 401k. You might as well just shove in more in there to minimize your taxes.

Max out the Roth IRA too. You can't go too wrong if you start saving a lot early, which is the most important part. If somehow you still don't know anything in a decade or so, you can pay an adviser to figure out what to do with your loads of money.
