So I'm a senior in high school and I'm currently unemployed, I've been trying to get a job for the last 4-5 months but there haven't been any decent openings, (where I live most of the fast food/supermarket employees are drug addicts) I've been trying to find a way to make a little money before shipping off to college, but the only thing I'm really good at is working on computers. Is there any money to be made flipping used PCs?

>flipping computers
are you really this fucking dumb? how do you even get the idea of "flipping a computer"

Buying broken/ old ones for cheap and selling them for 20% or so profit. Just running out of ideas.

Its not dumb, not a lot of people know how to work on computers. A shop near me charges 150$ simply to assemble a PC after you buy the parts from them.

OP buying a PC and flipping it will have low margins the money is building, fixing, and maintaining PCs. Doing data backup and recovery. Home network instillations.

The biggest issue is people moving away from desktops almost completely as well as laptops for chromebooks and smart phones.

As another anon was saying, you could make more money by fixing/assembly/software install etc, than buying and reselling. This really depends on where you're located and if there is demand for it. I use to make enough money to sustain myself like this through high school and half of college until I got a real job.

I still cant really believe you think this is a doable idea, good luck lmfao. you are giving away money if youre looking at a 20% profit from any type of business.

i totally agree you can make money putting them together, trouble shooting, transfer...thats what a mom and pop computer store, but for OP to think you can "flip" computer is ridiculous. he probably watched a house flipping show and thinks he can do the same thing to compters but he doesnt realize nobody wants to buy a computer with old part that he "flipped" lmfao

I've been doing all of the things you're talking about, and selling whole ones, and also this isn't a large business, just to get a little money for living on in college.

Where did I insuate that I'm selling 90s tech? I just bought a Notebook 15 from 2018 with a dead hard drive for $100 (retail is $400) and I'm selling it for $250 to a kid in my class.

The only way you can make money on hardware is if you get it for free. You must disassemble and clean the fuck out of used parts. Intel Duo cores like the q6600 can be had for cheap and then bsel modded for nice performance. you could come across dell boards and then slot it with a 750ti with 8gb ddr2 memory kingston ram. Even with all of this put together, you might make $80 profit and the market demand is low meaning you would sit on this machine for months at a time.
Why settle for crums when there are better avenues for profit? I would look into flipping cars or motorcycles. It is a little bit more top heavy, but in the US there are better profit margins than computer hardware.

The only way you can make money in the computer biz right now is if you can do networking for small businesses. You can run the normal residential business, but right now you want Businesses as your customer base. They are the ones who have the money.

If you have your heart set on computer repair, I would suggest working at apple. You can get apple stock and work part-time while going to school

You're a very smart young man with special abilities. Great idea to flip computers. Who doesn't need a computer these days? What you need now is scale. Stock up as much inventory as possible so you can build or repair any type of machine possible. Customer service, fren. That's what Dell did and they became a huge multibillion dollar corp

learn how to actually do something of value. Find someone selling a car that needs some TLC, fix it and profit. Not sure how it pertains in todays time but back in my day you can find a decent used broken civic for 500-1500. Clean the car, fix apparent problems, dont spend more then 500. Sell car to parents finding a safe used car for their kids first car. Sell for 3000-4000. Boom, 2 grand profit in one-two weeks of work. after doing several cars you do it faster because its the same problems over and over. This is what i did senior year-early college days.
