12736606 No.12736606 [Reply] [Original]

I graduate this summer with a mechanical engineering degree. No internship or relevant job experience. There’s no fucking way I’m gonna get an engineering job without ever having done any engineering work. I’m such a fucking retard, I wasted all that time being a depressed loser and now I’m going to have a worthless fucking degree on top of it. I’m considering dropping out and just working a shitty job right now to minimize the damage, there’s no point continuing on.

Im also a ME too, but i don't have time for internships, i need 3 semesters to finish it if all goes well, i was thinking on learning big data in the side so i can add it to my resume and basically try to get into that bubble by using my degree just as a certification that im not a retard

Keep in mind it depends greatly on where you live.

For myself I live not to far from Pittsburgh. Accounting major. Jobs are hard to get here with limited experience and combine that with most jobs are hired by people you know.

I graduated in 2012 and just last year I managed to get a 40k accountant position thanks to knowing someone.

Dude cmon suicide memeing is one thing but you can’t be serious. You haven’t even graduated yet, for all you know you might run into one of your friends whose boomer dad is looking for wagecucks at his engineering company and boom you get hired right out of college.

If not, you just have to go to a major city and pick up an entry level engineer job somewhere, there are plenty of them despite what this board will have you believe, even if they are kinda hard to get.

Myself, I graduated in 17 in Electrical and got a job 6 months out of college. Quit 6 months into it to write smart contracts as a freelancer. That work has dried up completely and now I’m running up my credit cards as I live in shitnowhere, west Virginia but that’s the only reason I can’t get a job here. Otherwise I was looking at tons of jobs with boeing and shit in Pittsburgh, but the gf & I are planning on moving to colorado pretty soon because we hate the EC so for now I’m about to work at the local grocery store and drive for uber for a while to save up cash, before we sell pretty much everything we own and go stay with my cousin in CO until I can get a “real job” (engineering) there.

It’s not all bad. But, yes, I am definitely looking forward to the day the S&P fucking crashes to the ground and the boomers with their fucking stocks get fucked.

Worst case, just do the loan idea like other anon mentioned and stick it all in crypto. That’s a given anyway; if you can’t realize the potential of bitcoin and other cryptos then you weren’t going to make it anyway.

Chem major here. The research jobs have been shipped overseas. Plenty of lab tech jobs for your BS if you like making 12-15/hr. I lucked out and got a research position at a small company, capped out at 53k after 4 years w/o bonus, and lost my job after they sold the company. Couldn't find a job for a year as everyone is looking for the 'perfect fit,' which is what you specialize in once you start working.

Who knew there wasn't a plethora of 'emulsion specialist' positions? Product development is reserved for seniors scrapping with each other for what's left here. Ended up unemployed for a year and just got into finance. Making around 1.5x my initial salary in my first year with plenty of growth opportunities.

by the time I graduated at 21 I had almost 3 years of practical experience on my CV. Landed a job in my last month of studies and started work one weekend after my last exam. They didn't even care if I passed after that, degrees are a fucking meme, literally no graduate in any field ever is ready to work in the real world, so you're useless without training. Not everyone has the time or money to train you, hence it seems like everyone wants 2-3 years experience out of grads, and it's impossible. In reality they only want someone who did something, anything at all, to show that they're not an NPC flowing through the river like dead wood and that they can actually start working a couple of weeks after starting the job and getting comfy.

let me explain the heartbreaking reality behind what's happening: you are an NPC. You think you're not, biz tells you you're not, but you just pissed away a huge chunk of your life doing exactly, and nothing more, than what people around you told you. It's not too late to salvage it, you just have to come to terms with reality, you will most likely need another year to get a serious job. You better start working today, on things that you can add to your resume. If nothing comes to mind you're a lost cause, being crafty in any situation not a skill you learn, or at least, not in days, weeks or months.

This. Top advice right here. Think about it. How many of your classes really challenged you? How many of your teachers really made you feel like you were learning? 30% maybe? And what of the rest. Power Point slides, multiple choice question tests. Is this what you want to spend your 4+ years of self directed education on? 70% bullshit that you can just blow through? If you do that, all you'll end up becoming is another incompetent normalfag grad, primed to work for $18/hr for some Chad whose rich father got him a director job right out of school, 55 hours a week for the rest of your life.

My biggest regret as a 30 year old CS boomer grad was not taking more time to learn on my own in school, do open source work with people online (Lainanons), etc.. I came out of school with a 3.98/4.0 major and realized it meant nothing. I realized the large majority of what I learned was incredibly dated and the actual skills required for work, I was totally lacking in. Now I'm 32 years old, with $56 in my bank account, desperately struggling to find work, and borrowing money from various family members while I apply for jobs and wake up feeling like death every morning. I can't even cope with weed anymore, as I have to be ready for employment drug tests, even though the interviews, and thus the tests, never come.

Everything you learn in school is a lie, OP. It's all just a con to get you to take out massive debt. They promise you work and riches, and you believe them when you're in school, but once you graduate, the work never comes. You just become a NEET and progressively slide further and further down the doomer whole until your whole youth has vanished and you're 100% un-employable.

I've now met multiple muricans who've moved in the recent years because of the horribly decreasing quality of life and increase in stress. Even if it means working a shit job you hate for 10 years, then so be it. Life isn't easy. The reason we don't hire unemployed people is because 9/10 they are just lazy NEETs with no drive or initiative. We want someone with drive, a go getter, and a continuous thirst for self-improvement. Community for 2 years and transfer is very cost effective for what you want to do, I made the mistake of going to a state school for 4.5 years. Very fun time and don't regret it but the bill is sizeable where I didn't need to do that.

If you apply yourself, develop your personality, you'll be perfectly fine once you graduate. The horror stories are mostly from fuckheads with poor GPAs, no social skills, or wherewithal, or a combination of those factors. Even my dumber friends in Mech E have found gainful work by just showing up.

BUT, there is a market opportunity in trades right now imo. Boomers are retiring from them in droves, and the next generation has bought the "everyone needs to go to college" line in full. Everyone goes to college now, it's a saturated environment, so a degree itself isn't worth much, more of the type of degree. And there are too little tradesmen, with the same demand.

A smart, enterprising, and diligent guy going into a trade could make SERIOUS bank if he does his time then transfers over to his own business right now, with a fraction of the educational expenses. Don't disregard the potential of being an electrician or plumber, they are always necessary and the supply of them continues to wane, especially good ones. Going back I would see no shame in making a roadmap for myself in becoming an electrician or something to that effect. But EE/ME are still in good demand as well.

This shit. Man. It's not enough whether you can do the work or not, you have to cuck yourself and lick the boss's shoes. You watch old shows and movies and the guys hang around the office talking shit, insulting each other, carrying around brass balls, and they got shit done and were applauded over results. Now it's a giant shittest to see how obedient the little doggies can be and who cleans the floor off with their tongue the best. Walk on eggshells 24/7, god forbid someone thinks your tone was rude or for even one moment you didn't hold a cocaine level cheerfulness.
Pretty sure my past job fired me for looking miserable when I was in extreme physical pain and could barely speak for two weeks. No explanations asked, of course, no excuses. I wanted to literally fucking kill myself I was in so much pain, but I didn't eagerly enough hold smallchat with my shit for brains coworkers and was being kind of sulky and quiet, so it's the axe regardless that I was the best performer in the department (even after spending 2 hours a day doing dick all).
