GPRO beating earnings by 20% edition
Hurray

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

You don't. But here's a good one, especially for medicine.

So these products have to be approved in several countries. The EU standards are the most rigid, but the only one that matters is the FDA approval in the US because medicine is more profitable in the US than it is in the EU. Most (nearly all) pharma products that meet EU guidelines are accepted by the FDA, but sometimes the FDA chooses to hold them back for whatever reason, causing the value of the company to slump.
99/100 times however, when the use of the product is proven effective in the EU (or even Australia), the product will eventually be approved by the FDA, causing the value to soar. If you invest in companies that are in a position like this you minimize your risk.
AVEO would be a perfect example right now.

>Dividend frens, do you ever swing trade your shares?

Sometimes but only when within a short period after the most recent ex-dividend date has passed. Say if it drops as usual on the div date then appears to be continuing a bearish trend I may sell depending on the range the stock usually moves. If it's likely just going to go down 5-10% I'd rather hold + average down at that point. If the TA is showing possibility of 20%+ drop, I'm out.

I am by no means a long hodl memer though. I sell on bear breaks most of the time. The point of keeping a certain percentage of stable div stocks in my portfolio is to balance out the volatility of the growth shit I actively trade.

You should also look into Viking Therapeutics. They have one drug that is in the phase III testing and THREE drugs they're working on that are ready to end their phase II trials and move into the phase III. I expect that even if one of those three moves on to the next stages of trials that the stock is bound to shoot up again to 16 a share. Not to mention if their current drug in the phase III goes even further.

Another is Amarin, I'm skeptical of it for now though because of this next earnings report. I expect good things in the future, but their sales are only $370,000,000 for their Vascepa drug. And should remain that for 2019. The fish oil pill their working on will be a big deal though. I'll wait until after earnings to make a decision.

not a massive downside. a few things.

1. if other stocks go up 10%, obviously you missed out there. but its hard to pick those stocks so ok
2. its more tax efficient to have a stock go up 10% in 1 year than to get a 10% dividend. but most people it wont matter
3. stocks with dividends that high are often dying businesses that are doing their best to return money to shareholders before they go under. so it's quite possible the dividend is not sustainable

you shouldn't be worrying about approval for small-cap biotech companies, you should be worrying about clinical trials
there's a long road of phase 1, phase 2, and phase 3 clinical trials that companies have to go through before approval can even become an option
clinical trials are the "binary events" that make biotech companies either moon or plummet

>> No.12675819

>>12675760
not necessarily, they could continue with the same dividend and the yield would increase.
companies generally set $/share dividend, they don't necessarily care about the yield directly

for example imagine a business that was basically a box around $100 with just 1 outstanding share. the business has no plans to expand or continue operations so they're just gonna wind down the business and return all that money to shareholders with a $10/share dividend.

day 1: share price is $100, yield 0% (no dividend declared yet)
day 2: share price is $90, yield 10% (remember yield is backward looking)
day 3: share price is $80, yield 12%
...
share price 0$ yield 100%
company cancels dividend and shuts down

>> No.12675822

science is what determines if a company will pass or fail clinical trials
finding a good biotech company is a matter of finding a company with good science

also, making sure they're not about to dilute to raise money is important

No shortage of options but here's a few for Gold: Kirkland Lake , Barrick , Gold Corp, and Yamana. As well in silver : First Majestic, Fortuna, and Endeavour Silver.

It's a great time because gold and silver prices are back to their 2018 high's and are looking mighty bullish (although we seem to be correcting back to 1300 for the next week-2 weeks), yet most of these miners haven't recovered back to their high's of 2018. Endeavour was up 3% at one point today even though silver was down nearly a percent. Further proving (to me anyway) the great break out potential.

With the likely renewed government shutdown February 14th, a probable resumption of the trade War in early March, as well as Brexit at the end of March I see good days ahead. Also if you like a little more risk you could try the jnug ETF, nutty returns there.

Most (common) stocks with ~10% dividends are just pass-through companies. So basically REITs and BDCs; if they pass at least 90% of their earnings through to shareholders, they don't pay taxes on the remainder. The downside with them is that they aren't qualified dividends so you pay ordinary income taxes on it.

True. A good time to gamble on bioshit is when they have a drug or two in Phase 2 or Phase 3. The stock often spikes upon successful completion of these two phases, however, while they're working on all the regulatory stuff for FDA approval, news releases can decrease and the stock price may slump. It takes a long time between successful clinicals and FDA approval/DIN get.

yes. because at anytime they can cut the dividend. when that happens the stock price invariably falls.

Things to look at when thinking about high yield dividend stocks: (1) free cash flow; (2) pay out ratio (3) history of dividend payments; (4) dividend growth (5) PtoE ratio or FFO ratio for REITs

Many high yield dividend income stocks are REITs (real estate investment trusts - they're forced to pay 90% out in dividends to get special tax status), CEFs (closed ends funds) or MLPs. (master limited partnerships). All three are risky for various reasons - i.e. REITs dilute their shares by issuing more to get more funding for projects.

If your investment period is in the decades, you're better off investing in companies like SBUX, CSCO, LOW, MSFT, AAPL, ITW, MMM, JPM, etc. who have high dividend growth rates and are also solid, safe companies.

If it were that easy to get an automatic 10%, everyone would be doing it.

Blessed T - Your Fat Divvy and Yield will give me lots of income ahead. You've been down and that's ok, all the more incentive to buy you up. Don't listen to the haters, the counter attack will leave them all in the dust. At least your management has a plan in mind to fix you instead of burying there heads in the sand.

Blessed AMRN - My growth and insane profit friend. Your gonna make me back every penny I've got in plus more as icing on the cake. Don't pay any attention to it's stock price now, the real action starts once the FDA gets off it's ass.

Blessed GE - You've fallen hard but hey least your on the mend. Your cheap ass price was all the inspiration I needed. Those upcoming Spinoffs of yours will pay me back in spades plus if you ever reinstate the Divvy that's all the more income for me.

Blessed DIS - You've been around for almost 100 years which says a lot these days. Your on track to be around for 100 more long as Florida don't sink. The nice Divvy is a bonus as income for me for the next 15 yrs.

Blessed LGF.A - Your Cheap, and your voting shares are cheap as shit. Which normally would be a big red flag but hey this time cheap is good. Your gonna bring in loads of Profit for me once someone buys your cheap ass.

Blessed Comcast - Your kinda overpriced and your Divvy is shit to boot, but least your management finally saw fit to hike it some. Your only saving grace is all those Films and Parks you got. Still you do have the HP themed stuff which brings in profit by the ton and like DIS you'll be around a long ass time if Florida don't sink.

Blessed Fox - Yes your management sold out to DIS and your days are numbered. But at least you've done one good thing for me; your gonna land me a Dis another share for free and your spinoff will bring me in profit.

So now I'll hold you my blessed Divvy stocks for a good 15 yrs or more and let Drip do it's thing. Then once the 15 years are up pocket your nice fat payouts and worry about nothing at all.

That's not bad if you can keep it up at 3%, I've thought about doing this as well but it seems too easy, like everyone would do it if it truly worked. You'll double your money every 27ish trading days if you reinvested 100%. 10k doubled 7 times is 1 mil. You could take 10k all the way to 1 mil in a year even with a couple of set backs. If pumping that volume doesn't start fucking with transactions or you find enough news to spread the cash across that 1 mil would be 100 mil the next year at the same rate. If it was that easy Lambo stock would be through the roof. That being said, it may be sustainable at a small level. If you continue you should start keeping track. What do you guys think about Nokia and Ericsson? Everybody seems to think that the tensions with ZTE and Huawei are here to stay, and that they should invest in American development of 5g, but I think that’s just nationalism. I fully expect China to beat the US to development. They’re due for a major tech victory. The US government wants to scare consumers on Chinese electronics but I think inevitably Verizon and AT&T will be forced to buy in and probably rebrand for American markets. I think the underlying tech will come outta China though.
