AMRS rises from the grave edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

I don't think so, I do not know one person who is going to pay for it. Why buy another service when you have Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Roku, DTVNow, etc...

And what content is Disney+ going to have? Ted Turner is not giving up the rights to SW. Is Disney going to cancel their multiple TV channels to put all of their content on +?

And to think that if Disney tries to pull IP's that are under contract to all of these other streaming services without a major costing court battle. That would be some funny shit right there.

Stocks aren't "at" a percent. And you can't buy $100 worth of Tesla shares, they over $300 each.

If you buy one share for $321, which is the latest price, you'll make a profit if you eventually sell it for more than $321 (ignoring dividends because Tesla doesn't pay any).

I think you should read a bit about the very basic before you start buying stuff.

Solid. That's a great start. Keep an eye on AMRS looking for dips. I'm not saying buy right now, but it's going to be an unpredictable rollercoaster for at least 3 days and it's most likely going to end those three days north of where it is right now. MNGA has huge upsides but a lot of sentiment keeping it down and that sentiment may keep it down long enough for them to mess something up. I'm in for a little. CGPOF dipped due to the issuance of more shares, there's probably 5-8% up left in them by the end of the week. Novavax just got initiated as a buy with a target of $8, there may be some movement in the next couple of days. Take note that I have stakes in all 3 of these companies so I could be clouded by emotion, but I also believe what I'm saying.

Sadly, one of my favorite super investors is a man named Kevin Douglas, and he, as usual, will not be filing any planned 13fs this quarter. Who is Kevin Douglas? Odds are you probably don’t know, yet over the past decade he has built one of the most impressive investment track records. Recently he has received some headlines for his thus far poor investment in American Superconconductor Corp., but even those articles reference the fact that he is little known above any other point (see the Wall Street Journal on the topic). If you do a Google Search for Kevin Douglas, it’s almost astonishing how little meaty information comes up for a guy who invests tens of millions at a time right now, in the age where Big Brother (aka the Internet) is always watching.

No, forget about the percentages. Look at your cost average vs. the current share price in dollars. Percentages are only used to determine how much a stock has moved from a given previous point in time. When you check a stock, the percentage shown will be the increase or decrease from the previous day's closing price.

I can give local leaf EXPERT perspective on Tim Horton's. Short story is the quality has dropped dramatically ever since they were bought out by RBI. Several news stories about franchise owners being displeased about a number of things RBI have done/are doing. Tim Hortons also no longer works with the supplier responsible for their former reputation for pretty good cheap coffee. McDonald's now uses that supplier for their coffee.

I vote YUM mainly because RBI is killing a former Canadian institution.

Thanks for the input. I'm not a fan of Buffet/3G's strategy of buying classic iconic companies and slashing costs/milking every last dime of profit until the company is ran into the ground.

They've done it here too with American icons like Heinz and Kraft. Companies that were gold mines and American icons and they somehow are on the brink of destruction due to their greed. Sad to hear about TH.

I guess I'll go with Yum even though the higher dividend was tempting and I hate rebuying back my shares at virtually 3x.

I agree. I think they've been mismanged pretty severely the last ten years or so outside of the marvel/lucas acquisitions which were genius.

Nobody cares about cable television or movies anymore and capeshit is running on fumes so that will hit them hard. ESPN is expensive to run and losing a shitload of money after all their attempts to politicize sports and the only time people watch it are for live sporting events, which cost more in broadcasting rights than they make in advertising.

Streaming had a lot of upside but they are mismanaging that terribly too and will end up losing to Netflix because of it.

Their theme park business is a goldmine though but it's a small portion of their business compared to the media.

Marvel was an okay acquisition for its time, but like you say, capeshit running on fumes. Trying to project the past performance of capeshit into the future is most likely going to be a bad call.

The Lucasfilm acquisition, however, has been horrendously mismanaged. Under Disney's stewardship, they've done a lot of damage to the Star Wars brand (not just with the movies, either, but also by royally fucking up the very important games segment of the IP by giving EA exclusivity) and I doubt they're going to turn it around.

They've got big investments in cable and ESPN which are going to continue to weigh on revenue as people continue to cord cut. I really doubt their streaming is going to work out like they're hoping.

Most of their other movies (including subsidiary studios) are increasingly unoriginal--if they're not poking their toe in the pool of SJW pandering--which won't help them draw audiences.

About the only thing Disney has going for it is the theme parks and cruise line operations, but those won't be enough to make up the performance of the other segments. I'd sooner just buy SIX, NCLH, or RCL in that case.

Also Lucasfilms was still a steal and brilliant acquisition for what they paid regardless of the fact that they did a shitload of damage to the brand. If it was managed properly it would have been a gold mine for 100 years but they probably already got at least 2x what they paid for it from the movie revenue alone.

Hey guys I'm thinking about dumping $100 a month into VTI via IBKR as a means to start my savings.
That's about 15% of my income. (3rd world country. No laughing).
Anyone that understand fees think this is feasible?
https://www.stockbrokers.com/review/interactivebrokers/fees-features
If I read here right about IBKR.
>If client does not spend at least $10 in commissions per month they will be charged the difference
They'll charge me about $10 a month for doing so. Is this right?
Also
>- Standard fixed pricing US stock trades run $.005 per share with a minimum of $1.00 and a maximum of 0.5% of trade value.
I really don't understand this fully. This'll be the fee they charge for buying the stock and will be balanced with the difference of the $10 monthly fee right?

Why Seaworld? I think there's too much risk of them having to shutdown animal attractions because some activists got upset and complained to regulators. They already had to to that with their iconic whales. I don't really know what else they have going for them.

The point of acquiring IP like Star Wars (or any IP for that matter) is to generate consistent, reliable revenue for a long period of time. This is where they're failing because of the damage they've let happen to their brand. Even if it were 5x what they paid for Star Wars isn't anywhere near what they could be getting out of it in the long run.

It all comes down to management and I don't like the decisions they've made lately, which results in a lack of faith that they will turn it around. GE was probably mismanaged for 30 years before it got to where it is today, on the brink of bankruptcy, and DIS is going on ten.

Splitting their media content into two separate streaming services is a very poor decision IMO and ruins their chance of overthrowing Netflix, which, shouldn't exist if it wasn't for their mismanagement and lack of vision in the first place. Ran Star Wars into the ground, you had a franchise grossing 2 billion a movie that is now just another tiresome franchise due to releasing a new moving every 6 months or less.

People are cutting cable at massive rates due to politicizing everything from sports to kids shows, along with high fees and boring unoriginal content.

The one good thing they have going is investing in their cruise lines and theme parks which are the only good assets in their portfolio. It would be great if they would spin it off into a separate company so it could grow properly without being weighed down by the rest of their business.

>> No.12665076

See Star Wars. Total propo flicks and they're canceling spinoffs because of lack of profits. Now imagine they go total SJW on Marvel after avengers, which with the Black Panther movie and the introduction of Captain Marvel isn't a crazy idea. All of a sudden beloved, classic heroes are replaced by obscure Marvel heroes due to the color of their skin. Sexual orientations are made intentionally vague. Plot lines center around social justice. The movies become shit because instead of focusing on making good movies they're focused on getting the "right" message. And they won't be able to go back, a small demographic in the US will get all over change.org and demand that they continue down this road if they attempt to make a right turn. DIS can really fuck itself hard if it's not careful and that's why I won't touch it.

They still will have their animal shows and other exhibits that aren't going anywhere, unless Zoo's go away too. They stopped the killer whale shows but they still have them in captive for another 10-20 years until they all die off which will keep drawing visitors. They're aggressively expanding their rides to offset the loss of the killer whale shows and its working. I think San Diego stopped their shows over a year ago and attendance is up big.

It kind of has that Disneyland branding magic too, lots of people have nostalgia for it when they were kids and will bring their kids back. Only problem is the stock price is still pretty high, and I think FUN is a safer/better value with a really nice dividend.

I bought 100 shares of VSTM @ avg $3.15 = $315
I sold a 3/15 $2.50 Put for +$25 ($250 collateral)
I sold a 6/21 $5.00 Covered Call for +$40 (100 shares collateral)
I also have 2 x 2/15 $5 Calls @ $.05
So far I am +$65 from option commissions - $10 buys.
+$.11 x 100 shares = $11.
So, in two weeks I'm up $66 from a $315 (+$250 collateral) investment.

I just started investing so I guess I'm hoping for some opinions. If I'm going LT on this company should I just buy stock and hold or does it make sense to try to profit from the fluctuations in the SP?

See like oil is going to go up up up, so what you would do is sell the puts that are out of the money and then hedge them with further out of the money puts. So you could sell the $11 puts and then buy the $10.50 puts so you can get paid for every $50 you want to risk. Then when the options all expire worthless you just made all that premium you took in on the spread.
