The Baltic Dry Index closed 668 today.
The Baltic Dry Index was 1282 on 1st January.

It feels like the Chinese economy has imploded,
they just haven't told us yet.

Shipping crashed like this in June 2008,
three months before everything else.

Just looked it up.
This drop today is nothing compared to what happened back then. Pic related.

There was a big bubble back then.
They have since changed the way the BDI is calculated.
I don't think numbers like the ones back then are possible today.
The index is still dropping 6-9% daily.

A quick look at the chart says it was lower in early 2016 without the Chinese economy exploding, but then again that coincides with the time the Chinese stock market crashed and they declared a mulligan lol. So in conclusion the Baltic Dry Index is a land of contrasts.

You know that the chinks take a week off on Chinese new year which is the upcoming week right?

The same drop happens every fucking year around the same time.

The Baltic Exchange traces its roots back to 1744 and the Virginia and Baltick Coffee House in Threadneedle Street. (English coffeehouses in the 17th and 18th centuries were important places for merchants and captains to exchange news.) It was incorporated as a private limited company with shares owned by its members on 17 January 1900. In November 2016 the Singapore Exchange (SGX) acquired the Baltic Exchange. It remains headquartered in London.
