Any biochem graduates here? Thinking of taking it in uni. Tell me your experiences, is it what you expected it to be? What are my job prospects with a bachelor's or magistrate degree?

Pic only for attention

I did a "biochem + molec bio" degree for ~3 years then just finished with a general chem bsc. I generally had a good experience through school but after school it took me about 2 years and 1k resumes before I got my first lab rat job at slightly above min wage, can tell you more in a bit if you want. I do QC tho.

Would not suggest. Instead go for eng/chem eng.

don't do biochem. It is complicated, has long hours, encourages memorization over understanding subjects and the pay is bad. CS is ridiculously easy, short hours, and basically twice the pay. From CS you can move into management for more pay and no less actual work.

i heard once you get to the end the shtick is that you are forced to stand up all the time because its unsanitary to sit down in a lab, it’s fucking hilarious man

Every lab has this sort of situation I don't really get it, but if there is a computer or two in the lab which is usually the case they will have some chairs.

I did biochem at a top UK uni, 1st class degree and I found it pretty easy. But I could have equally done most other subjects.

I did no end up working in the field or "using" my degree.

The main question is, do you want to stay in research/lab shit, or just use the degree to get into a grad scheme in finance (typically) or similar?

Hopefully it's the latter. If you want to do a PhD and become a lab rat then fair enough but then you're prob not asking us which subject to do. If you want to just get a numerate degree then really anything will do, desu, but try your best to learn as much general data science as possible while you're there. Straight chemistry may be better for that.

Uni is an incredible opportunity and there are endless ways to learn extra cool stuff, get on placements, meet people, make contacts, etc. That's what matters in the end, who you meet and how you can help each other later on.

You need to know what your goal is, basically. What kind of role do you want to end up in, roughly, in five or ten years?

This, OP. Basically your options with biochem/chem degree are: quality control (Very repetitive, probably doesn’t pay very well unless you’re lucky and get into manufacturing), data analysis, or a PhD/other graduate degree. I would recommend majoring in Chem Engineering if you like chem and physics or Medical Lab Science if you like biology and chem. Those degrees have much better job prospects.

Might be a bit late on this, but I've always fantasized working for pharma, developing drugs and such. But that's research, so it might be unstable. I do like the idea of being a medical lab scientist though, specifically virology might be interesting.
