I want /biz/ to find a flaw in my new business I'm about to start.

Everyone has garbage bins. They are essential to modern day life. What would happen when all of a sudden a garbage can shortage hit? Well, basic economics says that the price of garbage bins would go up.

Me and my friends are thinking of renting vans and stealing garbage bins in random neighborhoods before the garbage truck comes. We think we can steal 20 a garbage day.

A good city issued bin is like $90. We would then empty them out and iron off any serial numbers and repost them for sale on craigslist.

Not only do we think that we can make $1800 off the bins from current market value but we believe the price will go up as more people demand more bins as they vanish plus word of mouth about needing new bins.

We will eventually open a store just selling garbage bins and we will have our own serial numbers stamped and even spray paint them different colors so no one catches on.

Is there a flaw in my plan or am I close to becoming a millionaire in a few short years like I expect?

The garbage compay contracting with the city has a monopoly all on aspects of garbage collection. You're just going get sued.

The owners wouldn't buy the cans. If the cans get stolen they would just contact the city and the city would replace the cans. Private citizens are not going to buy their own cans from you.

We took that into consideration.

I think the panic of not having a can and not wanting to deal with bureaucracy would make them check craigslsit first before anything else.

Our adds will be slick to attract eyes, the cans can be advertised with professional photography like a car dealership.

> Garbage company and police see a bunch of cans being taken
> also see a bunch of cans going on sale on craigslist
> OP thinks cops aren't going to figure it out.

Also... when are you going to steal the cans? When people put them out in the street, they have garbage in them. Are you just going to dump the garbage out? Or are you going to wait until they're empty and then steal them in the middle of the day before the cans are brought back in?

Since they are issued, If you steal them the only demand you will have for garbage bins are the people that have gotten their bin stolen. Not a very good idea, You will most likely be arrested. You can shred them up though and sell the plastic, That's a good option.

Once again, we thought this all out.

The garbage will be dumped into nearby sewer drains or down hillsides so it is invisible from the street.

They wont see shit when we are an efficient operation.

Garbage cans on CL can be justified as supply to the demand.

You don't think some nutjob will hear about the cans being stolen in their city and just wait around all night to see if someone steals theirs?

You are either the most persistent larper of the day, or someone guaranteed to have his face on the internet one slow news day.

In the far chance that you are serious about this insane idea, let's clear it up for you...

1. Craigslist ad... I assume you will deliver since people don't have the capacity to put it in their car. So about the 4th time you go to deliver it is when it will be a plainclothes cop waiting to arrest you.

2. People don't buy their cans off the internet, and there's no "bureaucracy" involved in getting another one. All they do is make one call to their garbage company and a new one is dropped off the same day.

3. As soon as the garbage company sees that a bunch have gone missing, you'll be fish food at the bottom of the river, or you will be at the bottom of one of their landfills (don't fuck with the mob)

4. Since you're talking about doing this with someone else, as soon as you're caught, you'll each sell the other out (everyone does), and then you're both in queer street.

5. If you dump people's garbage in the sewer, you will have more to worry about than theft charges.

6. You plan suggests no one in the world has cameras and will see your big fucking truck going down the road and stealing them.

There's more, but that's just the ones that come to me off the top of my head.

I hope you're larping. I don't want to pay for your jail time with my taxes.

Not to mention, you say it is a "million dollar" idea.

If you get $45 per can, which is a good price, you're going to need to steal 22,222 of them, and that's not even counting expenses.
