>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Second would be GE, bought at 13 and sold at 11, only lost about $100.

You sell when bond yield inversion occurs and buy bonds and then hold those bonds for three years before selling and going back into stocks. The basic idea behind this is that the yield curve signals a recession, and you put your money into a safe asset until the crash associated with the recession occurs. Wait a year or so after that to let it bottom out and hopefully start to recover and then put your money back into stocks that are at a massive discount from when you started. The strategy can be summed up pretty easily like this: don't eat the crash, and then buy the dip after the dust has settled. The biggest risks associated with this are lower gains if there's a false positive and capital gains tax. But, unlike what you've just experienced, the risk of loosing your initial investment is quite low.

Keep in mind this is just a model and you can adjust your own strategy to fit your needs. For example, if you put regular payments into your investment portfolio, simply start making payments towards bonds instead of stocks for that period of time (this will allow you to escape the capital gains tax of selling your whole position). Maybe put the bond money into a fund instead of actual bonds since the funds will increase in value as the yields decrease, although, there are perks if you buy the bonds raw themselves, since you get the principle back at maturity and you can re position it then according to the strategy.

Assuming you start in a defensive position, you're worst case scenario rn is 2-3% returns. Your best case scenario is about 30% annual average returns.

You don't necessarily need to buy the exact bottom, you just need to avoid the decline that marks the start of the crash and get back in before it fully recovers to when you started. Usually that's a pretty big window. The ideal time according to my model was 3-4 years of holding. Keep in mind it can sometimes take over a year from the start of the first yield inversion to the start of the recession, sometimes 2 years. I don't think it will take that long this time, but it's better to be safe than sorry!

Here, this graph shows what happens if you hold cash for this same time period, a log scale makes it more clear whats going on. Cash is subject to inflation risk, which is greatly mitigated by bonds.

my point was if i have cash every month to spend, why would i buy bonds each month instead of saving it in cash as we keep going down, then when we reach 30-40% drop from ATH (close to the bottom of a recession) then start buying up extra equities every month with the spare cash I've saved up

bonds fucking blow and make like boomer% annually, i'd rather, if i can time the market, buy equities at 30-40% off then hold as they moon again like they always do

if your employer matches your 401k, always take the match the money is so good its disgusting
other than that, IRAs are generally more comfy because you can decide on what to invest in (whereas 401ks are sometimes bullshit funds) and you have more flexibility overall

roth vs traditional (both ira and 401k have roth and traditional versions) is a tricky question and depends on taxes and how they'll increase or decrease in the future and if you expect to have income in retirement or not. traditional accounts are tax free the year you put the money in, but when you withdraw the money, you pay taxes on the income. roth is taxed the year you put it in, but you dont pay taxes later. for example

>you put $5,000 into a roth, pay $500 dollars in taxes
>$4,500 doubles to $9,000, you withdraw & pay nothing in taxes
vs
>you put $5000 into a traditional account, pay nothing in taxes
>doubles to $10,000 you withdraw pay $900 in taxes

here the traditional account saved you $100 but obviously the specifics depends on your marginal income rate when you deposit and withdraw

dont worry about backdoor roth. roth ira's have an income limit where you cant contribute to them. I think its like $135,000 or some shit like that. so if you make more than $135,000 you're shut out of contributing to a roth ira. but backdoor roths let you get around that. since you make less dont worry.

I would anticipate taxes going up not down long term so I think paying taxes now while i make shit money is the best plan, so ROTH it is? But after the 5500 contributions, is there nothing else available to individuals outside of work benefits for retirement options? i dont need a HSA nor do i currently have kids to do a 529 for, so i just go immediately to a taxable account? That kind of sucks but ill take any profit i can make even if i have to pay taxes on it

yea based on your age and income roth makes more sense to me

HSA's are actually completely bullshit, if you're looking for tax advantaged options you should absolutely use them. HSA's are triple tax advantaged:

>you DONT pay taxes on anything you put in
>you DONT pay taxes on any growth that happens in the HSA
>you DONT pay taxes on anything you take out of the HSA

but you might say: anon, I dont need HSA, I'm healthy. however, you will eventually get sick and you will eventually use the money. AND HSAs have a bullshit strategy:

>go to the doctor today (or do anything that you're allowed to use your HSA for)
>pay out of pocket (minus insurance costs)
>SAVE the receipt (hardest part)
>let the money in your HSA grow for years until it doubles
>10, 20 years later pay yourself out of your HSA, completely tax free

also, since you said you make $40,000 its not that big of a deal. but imo you should be at least bringing your taxable income down to $38,000/year so you avoid the 22% marginal tax rate. so you make $40,000, put $5k into a roth ira, then $2k into a HSA, your taxable income is $38,000 and you completely avoided the 22% marginal income bracket. the rest can go into taxable accounts which is fine because you're only paying 12%.

My plan currently is to get together $5500 to max 2018 ROTH, then ill have no problems through 2019 maxing that ROTH, with probably a split of QQQ and SPY. After that just go straight taxable account in Robinhood. Is there any reason to use the various funds that Vanguard/Fidelity/Schwab offer over those index funds? Im willing to take on pretty sigificant risk since I dont make much money and want to retire well before 50, so Im planning to buy no bonds for a good long while accumulating equities in my 20s and into my 30s.

yes, however just SPY + QQQ is "ok"
SPY is the top 500 companies in the US. you're missing exposure to international markets and to small cap companies. something like VTSAX will expose you to small and medium cap companies in the US, which may be seen as good or bad. same story with VEU which will get you non-us companies

if your market thesis is "large tech US companies will see the most growth," (not really a crazy thesis) then SPY and QQQ make a heck of a lot of sense but if you worry about those sectors than you might want to diversify into something like

that is my thesis mroe or less yeah, and SP500 is self selecting since SPY is market cap weighted.

Last 10 years SPY is at 13.4% annual growth, VTSAX is at 13.7%, VEU is at 7%. From waht I've learned the last 6 months here it seems like everywhere but the US basically sucks, hell isnt the Nikkei like 2 DECADES in an official bear market since its never reached its all time high from like the 90s? Fuck owning all world shit, the US is the best for corporations and I want to invest there. If SPY or QQQ ever collapse then the idea is I won't be needing any money anyways, so i might as well take on the risk they require in exchange for better returns.

owning bonds or 'all world ex-US' seems like a waste of time in your 20s or 30s, and once i get into my 40s I'll probably plan to transition into either divvys to pay my annual costs or just sell growth shares as necessary to pay for waht I need to.
