Some people say buy gold. Some people say it's a bad investment because it doesn't gain interest. I don't know who to believe.

34 year old, 50k in Roth IRA. After I max out my Roth each year, should I look at gold or more mutual funds?

Same boat. I don't think I'll max out my Roth this year, but rather put some silver in the safe.
I'm tired of having a negative ROI and getting yearly fees on the 401.
Almost feels like I'm playing at a casino and the odds are against me.

Gold has an indescribable charm to it for me personally. It's just fucking beautiful to behold, lad. There really is some magic in it, can't explain it. And for that reason I don't believe the people saying "muh worthless shiny bro", it really does have a certain pull on you.

I’m considering gold too after maxing Roth IRA. At least as a store of value rather then money in the bank. Save enough gold to buy rental properties here in my coastal town. I’m thinking 50% gold 30% silver and 20% palladium. I’m thinking precious metals may go up in the near future ~10 years. But everything feels like a gamble now. I’m thinking bitcoin around 1500 before next bull market

Gold isn’t a good investment, but it can be a good hedge against inflation/the financial markets. It can be good to have a couple % in gold to lower risk of your overall portfolio, but it won’t outperform other asset classes in the long run.

Gold isn't an investment. It's a store of value.

Do you have wealth and want to store it and aren't worried about it increasing in value? Put it in gold. Poorfag who needs money to retire? Put it in markets that perform better.

This makes sense. It serves a different purpose and shouldn't even be considered in the context of retirement. However, it is better than hoarding paper money.

So has many other commodities and collectibles. Do I really need to say that past returns =/= expected returns? According to CAPM an asset with a (close to) neutral correlation/beta to the stock market won’t have a higher expected return than the stock market. In other words, if you think gold has a higher expected return than stocks long term you either believe that
a) gold has a beta > 1, i.e. it will swing in the same direction as stocks and won’t outperform during recessions
Or
b) the financial markets have COMPLETELY mispriced gold.
I doubt you believe gold will crash harder than stocks during a recession so you must believe b) is true. Perhaps you are a finance wiz, but regular retail investors like OP should assume that extremely liquid assets such as gold are somewhat fairly priced.

I may be doing it wrong, but I have just under 10k in gold, which is way more than what would be a sound investment for my retirement would dictate. I inherited a few American Gold Eagles and I've held onto them and probably always will. Smarter thing would probably be to sell them and dump the funds into an aggressive growth index ETF, but I can't bring myself to do it.

I think there is value in stability. Gold doesn’t tarnish and has been valued for over 1000 years. So I guess I’m for b) gold is undervalued and stocks are overvalued. Even so, I will first max out my Roth IRA and meet my match traditional first. Then I plan to save with gold until I have enough to invest in real estate rental properties. But bitcoin starting around 1500 to 2000 for long term.
