>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

The FED can't stop this recession. You realize if Powell shows weakness on rates it proves that economy is globally slowing. If he raises rates the market crashes. If he stops raising rates then people think economy is fucked and market crashes. Either way SPY is going to 130 within a year. This market is fucked and you are blind if you can't see it.

You let cynicism overcome you. Bears took your soul and made you a pawn.

>You realize if Powell shows weakness on rates it proves that economy is globally slowing.

No, it merely shows that the hike plan was too aggressive for the market to absorb in a stable way. That is exactly what Trump criticized him for. Powell need not consider rate drops at this time, he just needs to take a slower approach to accurately assess impact on each hike. +0.25% every quarter was and will remain absurd. Economy is okay right now but it isn't anywhere near strong enough to eat that amount of shit without throwing up.... so to speak.

imo the best way ive found to anticipate VIX spikes is that corporate debt/index divergence thing i was doing all year (hence the total market penis index i modified from rkgs original). this is my old pic from when i discovered the relation. go look at it now

the other really good one ive found is oil. vol in oil leads to vol in indexes 100% of the time.

also, remember:
>what is VIXs favorite animal?

the problem, as always, is timing.
the only thing i can say is to wait until your move is confirmed. youre not a hedgefund so you dont get to get on at the first busstop. you gotta be thankful for capturing the part of the move that they will allow you to.

NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) is an very common and often symptomless disease caused by the buildup of fat in the liver. In some cases, people with NAFLD will develop NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis), in which inflammation and liver cell damage are present in addition to the buildup of fat in the liver. In its later stages, people with NASH can develop fibrosis (scarring) in their livers, which can in severe cases progress to liver cirrhosis, an extremely serious and life-threatening condition. The NASH market is forecasted to be worth $20-$35 billion dollars by 2025, and most large players in the NASH space (MDGL, ICPT, VKTX, etc) are focused on treating fibrosis and preventing progression to cirrhosis. One example of a company focused primarily on treating cirrhosis, however, is GALT.

GALT's sole competitors in the NASH cirrhosis space are CNAT and Gilead. CNAT missed primary endpoints in its most recent clinical trial, and Gilead's NASH drug has shown mixed results in clinical trials. GALT's primary drug of interest, GR-MD-02, works by inhibiting the action of galectin-3, a molecule implicated in a wide variety of diseases, including NASH, cancer, fibrosis, endometriosis, and asthma. In a phase 2 clinical trial of GR-MD-02 for the treatment of NASH cirrhosis, GR-MD-02 showed a statistically significant and promising effect in the reduction of hepatocyte ballooning (occurs when hepatocytes, a type of liver cell, increase in size and then explode and die) and in preventing the formation of esophageal varices (enlarged veins in the esophagus that can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding). It did, however, miss its primary endpoint in the reduction of HVPG (hepatic venous pressure gradient). This may have occured due to an error in trial design. Per recently published FDA guidelines, phase 2 NASH clinical trials should last 12-18 months, which GALT's trial did not. Additionally, its effects in the reduction of hepatocyte ballooning and preventing the formation of esophageal varices were promising enough that GALT has moved onto Phase 3 clinical trials in NASH. In addition to NASH, GR-MD-02 has shown promising results in the treatment of melanoma and head and neck cancer, significant increasing Keytruda's response rate in a recent combination trial. GR-MD-02 is safe (producing little to no significant side effects) and relatively inexpensive to produce (being derived from apple pectin).

It's just that with tons of financial institutions already providing the data and tons of analytical websites already offering in-depth analysis of any share, combining the two seems like very obvious thing to do. I'm sure plenty of people have already done this, so I'd be surprised if no one was open-sourcing it or at least selling it. I don't need the software to spoon-feed me free money, just save me from manually trawling through the markets. Buy some Canadians which you expect to deliver good financials in January/February. ACB and APHA look nice. APHA is a steal because oft the recent short attack. Put the rest in US players. IAN, CURA, MMEN, TRUL or ACRG. Tomorrow evening Cuomo gives a press conference on the legalization schedule. Might be worth a play. MMEN has 8 NY licenses while the peers only have 4.

>Canadians which you expect to deliver good financials

Yeah... about that. Unfortunately, due to government incompetence, the roll out here in leafland has not gone smoothly. Buyers have very limited selection (or none, looking at you Ontario) on where to buy. Ontario only has their provincial website and no retail shops open until 2019 due to government incompetence. Quebec has their retail shops only open four days a week due to supply shortage. There is critical supply shortage country wide and the shops that have been allowed to open having extreme difficulty keeping supply stocked.

Now, of course undersupply should be a GOOD thing, right? See, the problem there is while all the LPs are selling whatever they've managed to get out to stores, they are likely to have the kind of financials speculated under assumption of full steam retail sales. That means Q1 may very well disappoint, although it will also clearly separate the long term viable LPs from the junkers headed for buyout or bankruptcy.

I am very skeptical about holding any Canadian companies when those financials start coming out in January/February. The two exceptions being Canopy and CRON due to the backing by big alcohol and big tobacco respectively. Even with those, I'll probably hedge with puts if I'm holding either at the time.

US is much rosier. It also has the benefit of being so early on that investors are able to dream up all sorts of wildly high valuations for the companies based on nothing, with a couple years of buffer before the reality of everything about realistic revenue under full legalization is years off.

Why do people love this book so much?

So I've read the intelligent investor and have moved on to random walk. I'm about a third of the way in and getting tired of him saying "there is no evidence that this strategy works" over and over with no proof. And I believe him that they don't work but I feel like I'm reading Freakonomics or something. Pop science bullshit.

Also... is it just me or does this book mischaracterize value investing when it defines fundamentalism? Fundamental investors who invest based on projected earnings aren't value investors, they're speculators.

Am I not the audience for this book? Or is it garbo? Or am I just an idiot millennial who requires too much evidence in my arguments?

I think the book's thesis is a bit misplaced. Yes, it's a statistical empirical fact that trading isn't a skill you can learn, which funds perform well or poorly is a random walk over time. but that doesn't necessarily mean the market is efficient, or that index funds are always the best bet unless you're time frame is literally around 40 years. The market can perform rather poorly in real terms for 10 to 20 years at a time. If that's your time frame for investing, you may have to look for alternatives to index funds.

I assume that refers to the component of anticipating price movements, yeah? There is the whole other matter of how to place trades, risk management, hedging, etc. The stuff you do so you lose as little as possible when you're wrong and profit as much as possible when you're right. That's the stuff that determines long term success and it is absolutely a skill.

I haven't averaged it out. It really depends. It's basically a form of treasure hunting and I wouldn't rely on it for stable income. The last time I hunted for silver I found about 18 dollars in silver after about 4 hours of driving around. There have been other times when I've hit the "jackpot" and found entire rolls of silver and made about 100 dollars with almost no work, although that's rare. There have also been times when I've driven around for 5 hours and found nothing or simply broken even. It's treasure hunting, plain and simple.

Why are you interested in the markets since you'd essentially be a member of the bourgeoisie by getting into stocks (since you'd be an owner of these multinational corporations).
I'm genuinely curious.

No it's a reasonable question. Basically I just need the money if I want to afford the down payment on a home sometime in the next ten years. We live in capitalism and we have to deal with capitalist institutions in order to get by.

Most workers have to engage in the same thing to afford retirement, it doesn't change the fact that they have to still work to live. Same goes for me, my interests remain with the working class since I spend most of my time working.

Even if, by some fluke, I manage to become a millionaire through my investments, though, capitalism still has major problems that I think can only be resolved by the working class expropriating the big capitalists. I think profit will increasingly become an unstable and tepid method of creating growth, and that capitalism will be unable to confront ecological collapse effectively.

Redpill me on hedging. It doesn't make long-term sense to me.

If you have think your play can move against you or that you are in too deep, why not just sell off a percentage of your holdings up to the point where you are comfortable with the risk again instead of taking a bet against your own trades?.

It seems to me that long term it reduces your potential earnings.

Is hedging a meme created by the brokers to make you think you are reducing risks while making you spend more on commissions?

> only if everything you predict is 100% right

Of course I don't think I will always be right and that's exactly the point. Let's say your strategy requires you to get about 55% of your trades right to make a profit. Why not just let those 55/100 trades play out because if your strategy is correct, you will eventually make a profit. By hedging some of those, aren't you actually cutting into your profits and potentially going into the losing side?

> it saves your ass when something goes wrong

Yes, but If something goes so wrong that it hurts you badly, doesn't that mean you were over-leveraged in the first place and the solution would be simply to reduce your positions to the point where you can tolerate the downside?

> that being said there is a right and a wrong way to hedge

Hedging as used to mean something like "shorting the SPX to hedge your long on the SPX" is indeed a meme. Instead you generally hedge to reduce unwanted risk. For example, if you buy foreign stock you are incurring foreign exchange risk, which you can hedge by shorting or longing the foreign currency. If you're holding a stock you expect to do well in the very long term, you can hedge your short term risk by buying a put. If you're arbitraging a stock by buying it at one exchange and selling it on another, you have the risk of holding the stock as it may suddenly crash, which you can hedge by shorting that stock.

The common theme is that you are hedging risk you don't want, leaving you only with the risk you do want. Obviously there are downsides -- any money you put towards hedging is money you're not putting elsewhere.
