>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Noob here. Can someone explain to be why people expect the stock market to go up 7 to 10% a year on average in long term when the economy only grows 2 to 4% a year? It seems to me that growth in total market cap would slow to a similar rate as economic growth.

Stock market isn't the economy.
Also the stock market is getting goosed by the government by QE, and low interest rates allowing companies to take out large loans to buy their own stock.
But you're right, it should correct eventually.

And it is definitely not "priced in", if this was true there wouldn't be any recessions.

Yield curve inversion... Check

Companies guiding downward... Check (I once had a better link towards data on this, but can't find it)

Fed pausing hikes... Check

Initial unemployment claims breaking trend and heading higher... Check

Rest of world on brink of recessionary economic data... Check

Valuations still at very high levels (although we have seen some p/e compression)... Check (there are so many different ways to measure valuations, so do your DD to look at others. But most are still relatively high right now on traditional measurements)

Liquidity behaving poorly... Check (there are a lot of other important warnings on this that are varied, but it's a notable issue. Only have one link here however)

Oil in contango... Check

Eurodollar futures curves inverted... Check

Credit spreads starting to rise.. Check

Cyclical industries getting hammered (housing, autos, semiconductors, broker dealers, regional banks)... Check (again, just look up charts on these industries/sectors)

Volatility breaking out... Check (just look at a vix chart...)

Market breadth performing poorly... Check

Market leaders dethroned... Check

1/2 of US CFO’s expect a recession end of 2019, and 2/3 in Europe & over 85% in Canada... Check

Housing prices dropping internationally as well as domestically... Check

If in 3 years from now people say "nobody could have seen this coming", I'm going to call bullshit. People get caught on the wrong side of things like this because they choose to ignore the warning signs that precede periods of growth contractions and recessions, not because they didn't see it. Either that or they plug their ears and repeat cliches about not timing the market as if that means they can't add any type of risk management into their investing process.

Fuck it, prob next week I'm thinking of bailing on GE and BHGE. Take the profit (loss) and roll it into more NVAX shares and Fox shares. So then when the Dis - Fox deal closes I'll wind up with 6 dis shares (4 Dis + gain 2 from Fox) and reap the nice 0.88 div that comes with them. Later when NVAX busts out those extra shares will be mighty handy. Least I'll be using my money on something that will actually show some profit.

For those interested in gambl- i mean speculating on the dude weed, this link is a helpful resource. It's a list of all publically traded dudes weed divided by their reporting currency (USD or CAN) and ranked by reported revenue. If you look at the US ones it will explain partly why i'm more bullish on US stocks than Canadian ones right now.

https://www.newcannabisventures.com/cannabis-company-revenue-ranking/

My holdings as of Friday are: TerrAscend (Canadian but moving in to US market this year), Cresco Labs, Trulieve, Green Thumb Industries, and Cron (because it just filled gap up from the Altria news). Small position in Canopy Growth too.

Recently sold: MPX Bioceuticals and Curaleaf due to bearish read on technicals and/or i wanted to take profit off the table

Whole sector including the ETF is hovering around support. It remains to be seen whether there will be a late December buy frenzy like last year or not.

Alteryx is also incredibly underrated. No one on here ever talks about it, though. Data Analytics and robotic process automation are good. I hope UiPath goes public soon.

But why? Their markets are already tapped out to the point where they now have to hide their sales numbers. The only reason their revenue hasn't dropped yet is their price increases, but they've already pretty much hit the threshold of what people are willing/able to pay. Apple is going to decline, especially once the recession hits with full force.

I stumbled on this article about Altria recently. It seems they have been quietly filing patents on vaporizer designs for some time now. Good on them for doing so as the popularity of vaping has already been cutting in to cigarette market and will of course continue to be a popular consumption method for weed. In this past I have been confused why big tobacco aren't entering the vape market rather than fighting losing battles lobbying against it. Altria currently own 45% of CRON (will when the deal closes) and will obviously be going hard on weed as the legal situation improves.

If in 3 years from now people say "nobody could have seen this coming", I'm going to call bullshit. People get caught on the wrong side of things like this because they choose to ignore the warning signs that precede periods of growth contractions and recessions, not because they didn't see it. Either that or they plug their ears and repeat cliches about not timing the market as if that means they can't add any type of risk management into their investing process.

>how do i invest with this great advice in mind
huh actually managed to find my old pic

its a little out of date now, but it ended up being pretty accurate until just recently w the oil crash. the tradewar stuff definitely threw a wrench in my predictions as its smashed commodities at a time when theyd usually soar

anyways, blue is GSCI total commodities index, green is DXY for USD and the white bars are VIX for the S&P. the white circles were me pointing out that we were going through a period of stealth inflation (masked by consumer spending still being high). the pink vertical lines are what you need to pay attention to for your question tho. each pink line is a localized peak in the GSCI. youll notice that what happens after this is a large (relative to the comm peak) VIX spike as well as a large spike in USD spot

so depending on how you wanna play it, long USD, short indexes, long VIX or short all commodities, or simply sit cash for a while. ideally you would want to hedge your bets, so perhaps you could go long USD w some light FX lev, and then betting against one of these factors (long indexes or long comms. i think long DIA is your best bet desu)

the racial tension is running extremely hot,and the economic stress from the last decade of immigration policy has still yet to be fully felt. take a look at frances employment, wages, living standards and the way theyre trending. these things happen slowly, with a considerable lag to the events that caused them. even if things were resolved perfectly right now, it would still take years for things to get better

>>12136014
yet the situation is still unresolved, and unlike every other movement in recent memory, it remains un-subverted (due to its decentralized organization). even if they stop wearing the yellow vests, i dont expect this sentiment to go anywhere unless the situation reaches an actual conclusion (which macron needs EU approval in order to enact. ie: not gonna happen)

not to mention the fact that these protests have been very inspirational to other parts of the world, many of which are experiencing the same or very similar problems
this kind of macro shit moves very slowly when viewing it only from specific points in the present. only when zooming out and anticipating the macro reactions of the rest of the world can we accurately judge what is happening/will happen.

i mean theres fucking TONS of em already desu. sure most are "ded", but that also means no shills, no bots, and no new arrivals (unless WE advertise, NOT hiro or whichever robot shoots up his school next and gets us in the news)

its just that many 4channers are uncomfortable with making the switch to other boards, and also that many of THOSE boards have a stiff no-cuckchanners-allowed policy (not without reason either. part of the reason the site is getting molded this way is BECAUSE of the userbase becoming mostly forumfags and redditors. all the changes scared off oldfags)

one of the main ones i can think of that would be worthwhile (as in ACTUALLY an upgrade in terms of site functionality) to go to is mewch. its a very slow site with not many posters. but imo, the owner, megamilk has actually done a decent job in optimizing the site, and it currently has the most embed options, highest filesize limit as well as board creation. i like the side catalog too as well as the formatting options.
also NO captcha (unless BO enables it)

ill shut up though as i dont wanna seem like im shilling for anyplace in particular (and ill almost certainly get b& for this post desu). i just wanna see a future where rkg can grugpost and spam guro, and people can use proxies/tor and whatnot to maintain anonymity if they wish. a future where our fate as /smg/ isnt left in the hands of some fucking faceless pajeets that none of us know

like i said, the owner there has put a good amount of effort into making the site sleek and user friendly imo. the "problem" is that their community is so small, but OURS isnt. its just a matter of convincing people that theres no foul play in an exodus (as there often IS). its also unique in imageboards in that it is one of the only chans where /pol/tier posts are the minority and not the majority (not to diss /pol/ too much, but the fact is, an active /pol/on a site leas to IC attention, and shills and bots. period)

>Seeing hentai and porn boards turns off a lot of potential users of 4chan.
given how often this site has been in the news the past few years, i think this is incredibly important to have some sort of normalfag filter.
this is like the digital version of race realism/immigration awareness. there is no amount of anything that will make a reddit tier newfag change into a respectable anon. they are NOT the same as us, and they never will be. they also exist in larger numbers, and like to invite all their retarded friends. they also prefer quantity over quality which quickly leads to a need/outcry for stiffer moderation.

the important thing with rate hikes is not only the present, and the future of where its going, but also, possibly even more important, is where we CAME from. in this regards, our rate hike environment that were in currently is COMPLETELY unique in that weve just come off of record low rates for a record amount of time. that (the free infinite money glitch, that is) did something very strange to our economy, and i feel its enough to where we cant look at similar historical data and assume anything with too much certainty

to add to this, i find that bullying is a much more effective way to moderate a board than outright removing posts. especially since its done by the community and not a 3rd party. deleting shit causes contention, and leads to meta-drama, which will ALWAYS kill a board/cause an exodus/schism if it keeps happening. the exception is when some cunt is just running a spam script endlessly. only then does it help to have a mod sitting right on top of it, enabling captcha temporarily, and removing any illegal content that could get a server seized

theres a very simple way to address this problem imo. and its not like im the only one who has been upset about the new moderation, which is why im bringing it up. im only discussing it NOW because its the weekend and theres little else to talk about (tho ive also been talking about market events so ur point is fucking moot). i dont wish to shit up the market hours threads with such drivel. and id rather not talk about it at all. but it still bears being said, and it bears repeating

regardless im merely putting forth an option for other people who are also fed up with the same problem
obviously you wouldnt be joining us in the endeavor, so idgaf about YOUR opinion either lad. feel free to hide me. this is shit that is affecting us all, and this is a good thread, so its worth having this sort of meta discussion about it. id hate to see some gook admin and a team of pajeet mods ruin yet another fucking place thats of any value

Probably corporate debt considered we're seeing all kinds of factors that would squeeze profits. Renamed CDOs will make it worse, as they did with the last one, but won't be the cause of it.

Anyone have some recent data on this?
Fed follows the market, not the other way round

>> No.12137775

>>12137682
we can only hope it happens soon. even if this IS the beginning of a recession, one would expect a big bounce before we REALLY get down to business. unless of course that was what happened from feb till a month or so ago

>>12137731
heres the thing
i cant imagine a scenario where the FED doing anything will HELP.
like if he keeps tightening, that means he thinks the market can handle it (but this means further tightening, which we can see has not been massively bullish).
but if he DOESNT, and decides to get all dovish, thatll mean that the FED thinks were gonna get creamed.
seems kinda lose-lose to me

its like a boat
you cant turn it that quickly
the FED DOES control the market, but its actions are meant to correct past events, and help steer towards the desired future (for them). i think its more of a fact of the FEDs actions only show up later down the road because the market is its own living breathing thing

It may be too late to change course. If he continues to raise rates the market freaks out. If he doesn't, he doesn't have a lot of tools to help save the economy from a natural recession
Pray for uncle Powell

if powell gets dovish you will see 50% of the SPX thats been underwater for years reverse upwards, carrying us to 3k. If he remains hawkish all money will flow from bonds to the spx anyway

Its mathematically impossible to not hit 3k next year

>> No.12137872

Why would the Fed raise rates now of all times? It doesn't look like to me that the economy's overheating, albeit I've been reading about new plants and shit opening quite a bit lately.

>> No.12137877

>>12137824
theres that shit again tho
im not convinced that the FED will sacrifice the efforts theyve been making to cap inflation and control USD/US economy, in favor for trying to save the market. historically we see that the FED often sacrifices the market in order to keep the US economy afloat (and in the 8 crisis, we saw them purposefully throw it to the dogs so that they could consolidate power over the large banks). i also dont think that the market sentiment at large is there to support such a stronk upward move rn. MAYBE by the end of next year, but its still a longshot imo
