If the company I work for has a retarded lateness policy and disproportionately punishes you for being even a minute late, why wouldn't I just call in sick every time I thought I might be late?

I don't think you have infinite sick days. Most real jobs don't care about you being <5m late, <10m in better places. If you are actually skillfull you can be <30m and upwards late.
