A lot of Eastern Euro boomers will tell you a completely different story - that yes, they were poor and didn't have access to Western goods as they do today, but people back then were more friendly to each other and there was more social cohesion, money wasn't as important as today (because of shortages) and now it's much worse. They literally complain about 'le good old days' all the time. Not just people from the ex-USSR, but also Yugos and others. It's probably just nostalgic feelings, because older people always will try to idealize the time when they were young, but still.
