Past a certain point, frugality/minimalism becomes less about saving money and more about virtue signalling.

Asceticism, after all, is a kind of virtue, so people will inevitably use it to signal greater status over their peers - which, in itself, goes against the principles of virtue and asceticism.

What if you enjoy being frugal? There is very little I would wnat to spend money on- meanwhile it can secure your bloodline for a few generations.

>> No.11781941

>>11781917
There's certainly value in that, but the signalling aspect is still important.

I think there's a broader point to it as well: even in our modern society that tries to the utmost to portray itself as secular and nihilistic, Christian virtues nonetheless persist.

Things like SJW victimhood culture, privilege-checking, frugal minimalism, entrepreneurial productivity culture - what are these but the old Christian virtues of martydom, self-flagellation, asceticism, and Protestant work ethic, all dressed up in modern clothes?

>> No.11781966

Mix of both is best. I splurge a lot on food because I like eating good stuff. And I don't mean eating out, but buying the freshest ingredients possible. I've lost so much weight since I started spending more on food. It's sad but eating rice and beans everyday is just bad for you and lowers your quality of life even though it saves money.

It's sort of wrong to call them Christian virtues and behaviors. Our modern state religion emerged from Christian sects, but it's no more Protestant or Catholic than Mormonism or Islam: https://www.unqualified-reservations.org/2008/05/ol5-shortest-way-to-world-peace/

A man after my own heart.

It's become debased from its Puritan roots, sure, but explicating these modern problems in terms of those roots is just so effortless - to see someone like Richard Dawkins today as the Unitarian minister of yesteryear. It's like catching these fuckers with their pants around their ankles.

If that's what you want then get rid of social security and medicare. Let those who didn't save die on the streets when they can't pay medical costs, that's what they chose.

This guy has it figured out.

I budget EXTREMELY strictly, but allocate proportionally more to buy good food. I will buy basic shit in bulk (oats, milk, eggs, pasta, potatoes etc) from cheap supermarkets like Lidl but will spend more for nice cuts of meat from a real butcher, artisan cheeses, higher quality beer and wine... Grow my own herbs and occasionally seasonal vegetables.

If you play it smart you can have an amazing roast chicken dinner for pretty much the price of the chicken and then eat for another 4 days with the leftovers.

Good food is the cornerstone of a good life. Butchershop meats are surprisingly superior in every way in comparison to large grocery chain meats. I just wish I had access to fresh seafood. Completely landlocked.

I guess I do a mix. I buy stuff that will last me years, I don't eat out that much, I don't just buy shit on a whim unless I really need it. Yet I live in a nice house and drive a decent car that's only 4 yrs old but looks brand new. The way my driving habits are anymore the car will last me 15 yrs or longer. Long enough for me to retire from my job at any rate. Lucky for me, this city has parks and shit to do so it ain't like I have to really drive anyplace long distance in order to have fun. Hell there's a damn park behind my house (property borders it).

I try to save as much as I can. Also have a 401k and pension + a little in a brokerage account. The goal is that when I am able to retire from my job in 15 yrs at 50, I don't have to work again unless I just want to. My employer's regs state that after 27 yrs you can retire w/full package which for me means just 15 yrs to go.
