Need advice.

Currently working a job I hate. The main reason I'm staying at the moment is I'm waiting for another department to expand. The catch is the company took a hit last year and they've been dragging their feet on expanding. I've been waiting 4 months and I haven't heard any updates. I'm looking at a potential income of 100k after a few years of experience. I'm making about 65k now but the job and the people are terrible. Should I stick it out or should start looking else where? There are better companies out there that might promote me faster but I'd have to start over.

I know you guys might need more details.

I think the fact that you hate the company is enough to say move on. Job security is nice but it sounds like you're skilled enough to land another job.

Mind you, it's all gonna be pretty subjective. I personally just value awesome people and happy work over high pay. I'd do 30k a year with amazing friends and co-workers before I did 100k with shitty people.

Just go for a walk and really think about what you value. Are you trying to start a family? Then maybe the income is more important. Have you always wanted to travel? This could be the right moment to pack up and go on an adventure.

How long have you been there? You have a reasonable grievance if you get asked why you wanted to leave. I say it doesn't hurt to look and roll the dice. They'll be, at worse, miserable there and likely making the same money anyways.

And yes, you may have to start over on the promotion side depending on things, but consider you may not have a path at your current company anyways.

Going from 65k to 100k is huge, so whatever you do try and keep up with that opportunity. Good luck bro.

Shop the resume out there.

If an employer dangles the carrot and doesn't follow through for 6 months then it's time to move on.

Thanks for the posts. I've been working there about 2 and half years. Don't plan on having kids any time soon. My goal is to stash back enough money to get some decent passive income going. I have a finance degree but my GPA isn't great because I was working the entire time. Unfortunately all the jobs I want require experience and the only way for me to get there will be from promotions. After that it'll be easy. The company is mediocre at best but could be worse. It's the department that's fucked.

details from your own post are more important in this case than any comments i can add:

you hate the job
you hate your coworkers
the company has performed poorly recently
there are better companies you could work for instead

good luck
