To be fair before segwit adoption this was a problem , the whole december shit happened due to late segwit adoption causing the fucking 250k transactions per day limit to bottleneck the network and start a race to the the highest fee.

The current ilimit of 750k is based on the adoption of segwit wallets which is only going to happen if fees become a problem again.

So the unconfirmed transactions are not a meme.
