How did they live through the greatest bull run the world has ever seen and still fuck up so badly? How do you not pay for a house in 40+ years when the prices back then were in the 5 digits?

most of them inherited it. there used to be a more meaningful stigma to abandoning your parents or kids economically. many of these boomers will die alone in nursing homes though taken care of poorly by nurses that don't look or talk like them and with kids that dont visit (either because they died of a heroin overdose or they're too busy working) . society has forgotten this horrific outcome. the fear of dying alone and forgotten with no dignity or comfort is probably one of the core fears at the heart of co-operative moral society, be it religious or not. we hardly have a society now though, and the boomers will get what's coming for their dumb behavior. then America will either become a third-world rentier state that continues to decline until it's totally unrecognizable or the next generation will buy cheap and become family oriented

there is something very off putting about investment funds buying up private real estate, whether they are foreign or domestic or a mix, as well as this trend of people not passing houses to their kids but using it as a retirement fund that's reverse mortgaged. it's like a privatization of escheat. wall street is escheating zoomers out of their customary inheritances to an annual ground lease from the local lord and his enforcers. at least you'll be compensated fairly if the king decides his roadway needs to go through your family's cottage

>private real estate
damn im tired and slow, I meant single family houses... not private real estate. multi family is one thing but traditionally single family houses have been an attainable goal but not with the way rates and incomes are moving and prices have moved. single family houses were not ever traditionally investment properties in any large capacity they were for people to buy, and they didn't usually make sense as investment properties. now there is so much money out there people are getting totally priced out.
