I'll be honest I don't think much of skywire or skycoin code quality. They aren't complete idiots but if you go looking for their consensus mechanism in their wallet codebase it doesn't exist. I assume it's in the skyminer code and is somehow closed source or at least not publically distributed. That always seemed fishy.
Likewise skywire is a basic https proxy with no routing and basic peer discovery.

Check your setup, I have a shitty DIY with four raspberry pis but they plug in to a decent quality Unifi switch plugged directly in to my router.

If it's not that, it might just be the miner that you're proxied to has a slow connection. Or your ISP sucks.

Try proxyswitchy for the browser extension. Most of the nodes I connect to are fast enough that I forget I'm on a proxy at all.
