but I'm 40 years for retirement. What happens in the next few years doesn't matter at all. You're dumb to not at least contribute enough to get the company match, though you're right most low wage wage slaves should prioritize a Roth IRA over 401k after they've hit the company match.

>> No.11343060

>>11342642
Yeah, maxed out to company match.

However, im 29.. im probally gonna take a 4k loan agaisnt my 401k and put it into btc... im young enough where 4k wont hurt in the long run.

Ill have to pay 40 bucks per paycheck to pay it back over 5 years. But thats fine, ill be at this jon for a bit.

And if btc moons, i can easily take profit and pay back 401k.

Win win, unless i quit. Its a pretty easy qay to hedge 401k and since im reinvesting into spec markets its a viable risk vs reward

Even without an employer match you're ahead of investing outside of the 401k if you drawdown by less than your marginal tax rate.

Once you add in the match, it can be beneficial to put the money in a 401k even with a 2008 level drawdown. In my case, at a 33% bracket + ~$6000 in matching means that my cost basis is $12000 and the total contribution is $24000 so even at a 50% drawdown I'd be even net-net.

>> No.11343985

>>11343934
good point. the only people that I know that truely lost during the 2008 downturn were the people that got scared and took all their savings out at the bottom because they were close to retirement. they had ~1MM in their 401K but took it all out at the bottom (probably lost over half a million) and missed out on the recovery.

You need to take some risks if you want to make money investing. That said, an S&P 500 index fund is not the riskiest investment you could buy. Low risk funds are not a bad idea if your risk tolerance is low (as it seems) - but if your investment horizon is long you might want to take an equities-heavy position.

One of the biggest return killers you're going to face on those funds you are buying is the expense ratio. You can replicate that 2055 fund by buying stock and bond indices and re-balancing once a year.
