My bank lets me open as many sub-accounts as I want, so I have one labelled "Investing". Each week after getting paid, before I spent a dime, I deposit ~$80 into the account. At the end of the month I look at my portfolio, note the percentages and where each stock is at and decide where to spend the money. If I work overtime, I generally spend all that on investing.

I try not to look at the stocks before this point, because the constant up-and-down stresses you out if you're a long-term investor, but it's tough.

I used to pride myself on iron handed hodling but eventually I realized the reason i was finding myself in that scenario so often was too early entry. At the time I was using MACD a lot and, because MACD is a lagging indicator, i was trying to front run it to make up the difference.
