Don't feel too bad. I did something similar except instead of going back to school I quit my job and traveled for a year. Got back end of 2016, my friend told me about ETH shortly after when it was ~$10 but I had no money left to buy. Watched ETH XRP and ANS go nuclear and only managed to make like $20k. Fuck me.
