Chinese ADR's go down when the Yuan goes down in value
They go down when the US Dollar goes up in value
This works both ways.
Chinese stocks bought in the US are not actually based on a combined market between China and the US.
An ADR is basically a bundle of stocks bought from a foreign nation and sold on the home nations market.
This means the stocks value is heavily influenced by sentiment between the countries, because during war-time they would literally
be worth nothing if shit went down. Not to mention as someone mentioned earlier, the Chinese government cannot influence the price of an ADR
directly. Chinese stocks are typically valued at 50-60% of the forward P/E of their US counterparts, so the idea is that investing in them will
eventually bring about greater returns as its market finally matures and uses its middle class. If people have negative sentiment about China in general
and the trajectory of its economy, they are not going to value a company's shares, which could be denied to them at the drop of a hat, at full value.
Betting on ADR's is basically assuming that China and the US will get along, at some point.
