So guys, help me out. I know what the difference is between limit order, market order, stop order and stop-limit order. But why would one choose for stop-limit order instead of a normal limit order. Isn't it basically the same except for the trigger? Why would you wanna include the trigger. Say I have 1 share of 30 usd and I wan't it to be sold at 25 usd if it get's that low, why would I first choose to put a trigger at 25.5 before it sells at 25? I don't get it.

Canopy Rivers trade summary to this point. The purple dots on the chart indicate the price points I had/have buy orders. Size of purple dot is relative size of buy order at that price point. This is my usual procedure for cost averaging in to a position when I have no idea where the bottom will be. Large purple dot on the bottom right is the size and price level of an order that has not, and may not, get a chance to fill before trend reversal happens. There is another even larger one than that another 1.50 below it.

If $7 turns out to be support level for a reversal, I will add in one more buy order at current price then set a stop loss to ride the wave upwards.

Normal limit orders will fill at the limit or better price (for you). The stop prevents the order from being active until the stop price is hit, which eliminates the problem of your order filling before you want it to. You got it. There are other use cases for stop-limits but that's correct for a stop loss scenario. You don't actually have to set the limit part in the stop-limit if you don't want to (although some brokerages may require you to fill it out). A stop order without a set limit just dumps all your shares at market price when the price has fallen down to the price you set the stop at. Using the stop-limit allows you to account for a scenario where price falls too fast and you would rather hodl than have your order fill at a severely slipped price point (ie, way below your stop because the price is dropping that quickly). Stop = start selling at market price, limit = discontinue selling at any price below this level.

Stop and stop-limit can also be used on buy orders for different strategic reasons.

Hardest lesson to learn is to sit still during the big drops and don't freak out. depends on how long it's been since a 10% correction (once a year on average) and how big the gains have been during my last bull period. If I'm making dumb money I'm taking all my divs in cash and waiting for the next 10 or more dip. I'll start scaling in at 10 and 15 and be mostly tapped out at 20. If it dips harder than that it's one of those 2008 like shits you can't plan your life for so IDGAF. 13.3% is the average correction. So I want the odds in my favor that I'm getting a good buy but not waiting for shit that only happens once or twice a lifetime. I had convinced myself a fair amount too. I thought that as a wholesaler, it wouldn't have the same risk exposure as a biotech company... Then it fucking halved at open.
The financials were incredible (and still are) but the reason why is that their growth is in the toilet.

Short time lurker here, seriously wondering what I should try to get out of /smg/ and /biz/ in general. I have no interest in crypto, and I have a mutual fund and no plans to meme around daytrading or anything.

Seems like a lot of /biz/ is low quality shitposting or random coin shit or both. I'd like to learn something from /smg/ but I'm not sure if I'd get much out of it beyond general financial whereabouts. Otherwise this board seems pretty slow.

Twenty-five days. I'm still new to this, but I've watched the stocks /smg/ has been hyping rise and crash and be all over the place. I'm sticking with my slow-growth value investing. No interest in being a day-trader.

I don't have a huge amount of disposable income, so I squirrel away whatever I can afford at the end of a week and buy stock at the end of each month. I think that's a decent return considering I didn't do much after buying. I'm hoping once I have more capital amassed I can look at some "gamble" stocks.

I mean, I have a vested interest in the S&P doing well because of the mutual fund, but riding the day to day ups and downs of the market like a rollercoaster is only worth so much when I could just do nothing and the money I make or lose wouldn't change.
