Defense Stocks master-race edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Read this interesting article about "platform economies" where companies like Amazon and Alibaba centralize market activity on their online platforms, allowing them to very effeciently extract wealth from these market activities without actually producing anything of value. Operations like these are single handedly responsible for today's and the future's economic malaise for consumers as wealth gets concentrated in the hands of these large corporations that outsource all their labor to the latest cheapest shithole and hide their money on islands so the government can't efficiently tax them.

It meshed pretty well with my own personal theory of economics that I came up with on my own so I was pretty surprised when I realized just how similar my thought was to theirs.

Jerry Powell is going to provide us with what we know is already true, bonds are safer investments. Trade policy does not stand between the FED and the world. Balance sheet is shrinking, and rates need to get back to normal levels to make sure you faggots get left holding the bag... i mean the dollar is the worlds reserve currency because of spending and consumption. Tarrifs will not impact FED policy to raise interest rates 2 more times this year. We will continue to raise rates. Have more tariffs, and tax cut part two will be a big part of Trumps re-election campaign.

How could you not vote on tax cuts part two. Everybody has a job and we are getting money from overseas to support our own economy for once. It's like if there is a blue wave in the mid terms, wait till re-election comes along. Mother fuckers will kiss and wash the feet of Donald J. Trump.

X has better performances on parameters closely related to sales and earnings.
NUE outperforms X on parameters related to debt and spending.
In this particular sector, especially after Trump tariffs, I don't think that having a low current ratio (which is not even THAT low) or a high debt/equity ratio is going to cause any damage to the company, and it's not going to affect the business in any major way.

The parameters you see here are just the ones I usually use the most. If you think that there are some other parameters that you prefer using for your strategy, please tell me your choice and educate me about it.

I looked up briefly those 2 companies on Finviz and Morningstar.

And I tend to see Nucor as a better company.

But in my opinion, you should look futher in depth into their businessses:
- how about their production capacities ? are they maxed out ? where are they located ? etc
- their customer portfolio

Also, Nucorp has better operating margins and they can undercut X if they want more market share. I think this is why market is pricing NUE higher than X.

I want to invest in dividend stocks but I only have about $50 to $100 a week to invest. Should I save my money and buy one stock a month or should I buy a small portion of a different company every pay cheque?

What makes a good dividend stock? just the yield? Since the amount is so small I was looking at smaller stocks, also preferably canadian since my brokerage, cibc, charges fees for currency conversion and $7 per trade.

I was looking at Ford and West forrest products. I know the concensus on ford, but not sure about the other one, or other dividend stocks to invest in to grow my portfolio. I just started on wednesday and like a total fool, invested my inital $330 into "meme" stocks.

I used to get that reaction too, especially as my father failed miserably at every investment he ever attempted. The thing that turned it around from skeptical looks and jokes uttered to my face was the latest crypto bull run. I had a little bit riding on BTC and ETH from August 2017 through December 2017. When BTC was in the news for going parabolic and approaching 20k, calls from family came in asking if i could help them get in on this money fountain. I told them to stay well away as BTC had far overextended itself and would likely rapidly decline in price 4-8 weeks time. I gave very basic description of the concept of TA. They were mad at me for not "helping" but they did stay out of crypto. BTC popped sooner than i expected. Family soon saw how i was right, how they would have lost large chunk of life savings had they fomo'd in as planned.

No more skepticism although i do have to deflect requests to invest money for them on occasion. I direct them to pro brokers. I don't want the responsibility or liability.

Prices should be pretty low at that time as all the speculative money will have pulled out by then. Fair warning, if sales do not meet or exceed expectations, prices will tank across the whole sector. This is why entering long AFTER first financials is safest move for that kind of investing.

Bezos will be laughing at you

Amazon is not a monopoly by any definition, they found the loophole that beats all monopolies

they dont own 100% of one market/sector

they own 10% of many many different markets/sectors (books, video streaming, online marketplace, delivery service, home electronics, groceries, ect ect)

and since they have so much cash flow, they can operate one branch at a loss for far longer than any competitors can

the only way to compete at a scale of amazon would be if disney, ford, walmart, apple, and a bunch of leaders in other markets, united together into one company

In any case my antipathy towards amazon stems more from my general thoughts about these tech giants. The tech giants cause economic malaise in the US by outsourcing all their labor and keeping their money outside the reach of US taxation. They then proceed to do business in the US and extract wealth from it in the process which they then invest in outsourcing and tax evasion, as well as increasing their market share to better do both of those things. It's a net loss on several levels for the greater US economy.

amazon moves revinue between sectors, and if anything uses US wealth to gain access in foreign markets, but they do not outsource jobs and manufacturing, at least not at a noticable scale, like many tech companies do

>when I feel like the stock is headed downhill or no longer giving me a boner for whatever reason

the problem I personally have in this is that I trust setting stop losses over my own ability to identify if a dip is a healthy pullback or a sign of a longer-term downtrend
if I get stopped out, I either wait for it to go lower and buy back in later or just move on if it goes back up before I buy in again

the less active you are, the less money you typically lose
try position trading, it's the best balance of fun and comfy of all possible approaches imo
it's active enough for you to pay attention to what happens over the course of days and weeks, but long-term enough for you to not actually get stressed out over them

the trick is picking good companies and riding long term trends, so fundamental analysis is a lot more important than technical analysis, unlike in swing trading and day trading

What is up with debt to equity ratio on Investopedia? Boeing for example is literally at 1000:1. They can't seriously owe $1000 for every buck of equity, right? Other blue chips like Apple or Microsoft are at 100, which is also crazy. How do they not get crushed by debt?

So when you sell to open an option, there are two types you can sell to open, a call and a put. You need to understand how they work before understanding what you can (and can't do) with them. I'm gonna do some reddit spacing to get this clean:

When you buy a call, you are paying for the right (aka choice) to purchase that stock at the set price (known as the strike price) for a limited period of time.

When you buy a put, you are paying for the right (aka choice) to purchase that stock at the strike price for a limited time.

Now being on the opposite side of the trade, selling:

When you sell a call, you are receiving a fee for the OBLIGATION to sell at the strike price for a limited time.

When you sell a put, you are receiving a fee for the OBLIGATION to buy at the strike price for a limited time.

So as you can see, with buying options, the only risk is what you pay for the contract. When you buy however... let's explore.

Image you are the SELLER of a CALL for stock XYZ. The stock is currently at $40. You decide to sell a call at the strike price of $50 for $66 that expires in 1 month. So you get $66 credited to your account and you are thinking "as long as the stock doesn't go above $50 I'm safe to keep my $66 I made." Now let's say that doesn't happen. Let's say within the month, the stock shoots to $100. You don't own the stock. But now that guy activates his contract because he wants to own the actual shares for whatever reason. Now you as the seller have an obligation to get him those shares. Even though right now you don't own any. So you go into the market, and have to buy 100 shares at $100 a pop and then it gets transferred to him.

As you can see that can be a dangerous situation. So there are certain levels for option trading accounts. The highest tiers will allow you to do trades like the ones above. Usually it'll be a kind of margin deal where you need like 20% of the potential transfer at anytime or something.

Thorough information. I appreciate that you took your time to write it out. This makes sense to me, but it also seems I should wait on trading options, and then work my up by buying the right options so I can get some favorable prices on stocks.

>> No.11180002

>>11179993
Well, don't just go straight into buying. There is so much I wish I could relay to you on option trading. The /biz/ and WSB way is a pretty "fuck it" style where they buy high gamma options and hope for a pop that turns them into huge rollers. There are so many ways to use them besides that, and the understanding of their mechanics is very important.
