the commodity of the future edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

NIO is one of many companies that had have followed that pattern
A company gets a lot of hype, a lot of people buy in, and then even more buy in because other people are buying in (FOMOing)
The stock spikes in price, then the initial investors take their profits and the people who FOMO'd panic sell, and it falls just as dramatically
It's going to take a while for it go back up, if it ever will

AMD is good tho, it still has a ways to rise imo

It really depends on how much of a necessity it is. The trend right now is private, like SpaceX doing what NASA used to do.
Iirc desalination plants already exist but only in small operations. My guess is it’ll start out private as a liberal save the planet virtue signaling thing for R & D but if we get to the point it’s needed to keep us alive the government will step in.
It’ll obviously have to be cheap and efficient so my bet is on some type of solar plant. Just a bank of mirrors focused on a boiler. Then of course you have a bonus of salt to sell.

From Wikipedia:
>According to the International Desalination Association, in June 2015, 18,426 desalination plants operated worldwide, producing 86.8 million cubic meters per day, providing water for 300 million people.[6] This number increased from 78.4 million cubic meters in 2013,[5] a 10.71% increase in 2 years. The single largest desalination project is Ras Al-Khair in Saudi Arabia, which produced 1,025,000 cubic meters per day in 2014.[5] Kuwait produces a higher proportion of its water than any other country, totaling 100% of its water use.[7]
So it’s already up and running on a smaller scale.

I thought of investing in Verizon because they've been performing well, but their balance sheet doesn't look so great. They have a lot of liabilities compared to the amount of profit they rake in (as opposed to ATT, which has similar debt but higher profits compared to expenditures) and if there's ever a scenario where Verizon start to plunge that debt would put them in a lot of trouble.

Thoughts?

literally look at every stock market crash and compare gold

stockmarket crashes in the US cause dollar to get bought up and moon, which absolutely crushes gold and usually all commodities in general w precious metals being the worst. it can be a vehicle to hedge inflation after the recession has kicked in full swing, but its definitely not the best due to the metals also being under central bank control.

seriously, the chinese are such a parasitic entity for our country. the country has been literally sold out to them for the past 25 years. they will not stop because someone asks them nicely. they make too much money to even consider diplomacy. obviously no one wants a hot war, so the trade war is literally the only available option

>If the goal is tariffs than I think that's short sighted
of course they arent the goal
theyre like sending in a fleet to go engage the enemy
they dont help anyone directly, both sides get hurt, but they hurt the enemy more if done correctly. id wager that trump knows more than most about the various bubbles that CCP is hiding (specifically their real estate bubble), so id imagine his goal is to eventually starve em out, and get the chinese to be begging for a new trade agreement. of course the CCP is far more inhumane w their own people and will (and have) gladly let their people starve before capitulating. i just believe they are far closer to this capitulation than anyone realizes and i believe thats why trump is applying so much pressure on them.

but one very important first step towards putting the chinks in an economic headlock is ruining chinese imports ability to undercut american products. and part of this is honestly just weaning americans off of cheap chink shit. the american consumer is addicted to cheap chinese ripoff garbage and even thought its admittedly terrible, they will buy it because its cheap. so one way to stop this is to make cheap chinese shit not cheap anymore, thus reducing it to what it is: shit.

Hey /smg/, I know this is a very general question, but I'm thinking about putting some of my money in stocks, but for some reason I can't shake the feeling that I'm entering the market at the worst possible time.

I'm completly new to stocks so I'm not very knowledgeable, but I'm looking at the way the stock market went up during the last decade and I can't help but think: This can't go on forever, right? At some point, there's going to be a sizeable correction, and even though I couldn't name you one solid reason why it should happen now, I just got a bad feeling about this.

Am I just paranoid? Or is there any rational argument to be made that it is generally speaking a bad time to enter the stock market right now, especially for some ordinary guy that just wants to spread out a few bucks amongst solid companies.

i havent seen too much of it yet, but be VERY careful w this one imo
one of my big red flags w OTC memes is when the insiders all are holding onto a shitton of preferred shares, while the regular stockholders are all holding common.
this means that the insiders are all covered and dont have to worry about total loss in a bankruptcy. but guys like me or you? POOF. total loss

the way the shorts have been movng is VERY interesting, but be careful not to get in over your head w this one. the company could easily just fuck the shareholders ad infinitum and keep robbing them via dilution etc
they dont care cuz their risk is covered by the preferred stock (that you nor i can buy).

Yeah, I'm not sure what to do. On the one hand, people have been screaming recession every day for the past 2-4 years. If I had invested my money back then I would have missed out on 2 years' worth of 8% annualized gains.

I only have 12k USD at stake, so I'm thinking that it'd suck to go through a recession but at least from that point on I'd be buying into a dip. Sure I'd lose maybe 20-30% of those 12k, but all my future investments will be spot on.

I'm not sure I can predict when the crash will come nor how bad it will be (maybe it'll just be a really long period of stagnation?), so I think I'm just gonna close my eyes and keep pumping away.

Do yourself a favor and do the math based on different outcomes. It's basically impossible to recover from buying at the high point of a market and basically impossible not to see massive gains from buying at lows. Can you time the markets? No, but you can recognize when you're at a historical high and when you're at a low. Holding cash is a much better position than you might think. It gives you good optionality.

you're thinking too big. it's not all or nothing as a longterm investor. crash or up. we have a 10% correction on average every 11 months. just be there for it. it doesn't have to be the "big one" that you wait years for. just buy the next significant correction and if it turns out to be the recession then you said yourself that's great because you can average down every paycheck. the flipside is that in likelihood a correction will revert back to the uptrend and then you stack your cash and wait for the next one.

like I said though, most people don't have the understanding or discipline to actually do this and would be better served simply forgetting about it and dollar cost averaging every month. it's up to you which is better for you
