Actually interested in your field, what did you study and where? I got into refrigeration tech because I thought I'd be able to work on sustainability issues, but funnily enough the industry is dead and people don't give a shit about energy optimization. Thinking about energy management studies, maybe coupled with renewable? What's your take?

energy management is shaky. unless the company is a big producer with loads of energy usage or a company with a branch-network (retailers etc.) it's boring. 99% of the companies implement an energy management system due to requirement by law and they do the bare minimum to get a certificate. if the requirement by law ever falls away that field will be pretty much dead.

Renewable energy is much more interesting. while it also basically exists due to subsidies it has way more legs and a future in my opinion. the era of mainly coal powered energy is currently at the beginning of its end.

Where is the focus on currently? Are there any efforts to actively reduce energy consumption or is it all about replacing old infrastructure? Got any good resources for further reading?
And obviously the big question, is a masters in the field of renewables even worth it or would I be better off just starting a business installing PV cells or whatever? Thanks for taking your time.

As I said big companies with huge energy consumption (think BASF, Daimler, or even banks with loads of branches) have a natural interest in reducing energy consumption since it's a huge cost factor for them.
But Germany consists of mainly middle sized companies and the interest of actually reducing energy consumption in that sector is pretty much non existant. However that's where the main consulting work is nowadays, since the large companies have been managing their energy for ages already. The law that requires an energy management system is pretty new and brought all other companies (except for the really small ones) into the fold.

Renewable energy is interesting with a focus on large scale plants and international projects in my opinon. The home owner market is dying as well (government killed it off by tightening laws and low interest environment). So look for ocmpanies that do large scale projects (innogy, juwi, abowind, etc.)

if you want to become an engineer working for a large company I recommend getting a Masters. my professor told me you are not an engineer in Germany without your Masters (tfw no good old Dipl-Ing). you could of course start your own company but that is haaaard work and will most probably push you into the private sector (home owners etc.) where in my opinion business is slow..

That is all of course my opinoon, someone working in the private sectot will probably have a different one.

It's funny how in one year's time I may have my life financially completed if everything goes well in our business.
I'm planning on investing my share of the business in stock options and precious metals
