Four points that come to mind:

When holding gold was made illegal in the US and it was confiscated, those that held it as coins could claim it was as a collection/hobby so were exempt (or so I read somewhere)

Coins are harder to counterfeit, although that shouldn't matter if you get somewhere legit

Check the tax rules for your country. I many places, coins are exempt from capital gains tax whereas you would be liable for it on bars

However, coins are usually more expensive and have a premium on them because they take a bit more effort to produce.

Bullion coins. Gov't minted, nominal value as "legal tender", more widely recognized than rounds struck by a private mint.

Expect to pay a premium for the manufacture, storage, and distribution of bullion coins. For the American Eagle series:

Silver: Spot Price + $2

Gold: (1 oz - 3%, 1/2 oz - 5%, 1/4 oz - 7%, 1/10 oz - 9%)

Coins are more recognizable. Generic bars are alright. But the closer it is to spot price generally the less well respected it is.

Get 1oz - 10z coins or bars. If you plan to hold for a long time or have a silver fetish then stack 100oz bars and feel like a boss.

Coins, coins, coins. Always get coins, never get a bar they are very easily counterfeited. You can verify that a coin is real in 2 seconds using audio frequencies. Best coins in my opinion are 90AU/10CU alloy (like the krugerrands or old 20 francs). They are more durable and won't scratch easily.

I created a spreadsheet to produce frequencies for any gold or silver coin. Although silver is less likely to be counterfeit because it's value is far lower than say gold or platinum of the same weight.

It depends on what you think will happen and the metal you want to invest in.
For silver I'd just go with 10th oz rounds.
For gold, if you expect the industries and processing centers to never fail, get straight gold bars. If you're hedging against societal collapse that could effect precious metal processing, you should prepare for barter and get the gram divisible gold bars.

Those are dumb. Also I wouldn't buy a coin with some royals smug face on it. I don't hold silver any more, but if I did I would get generic APMEX rounds, they are the best bang for your buck and the best price to sell back for. I believe APMEX coins are just Sunshine Mint coins produced for them.
