Been using a french press before hipsters discovered coffee. That, or a gravity filter, or just a decent auto-brewer are all you need.

The best machine is this one (see picture). Zojirushi. It doesn't waste power on a heating plate, so all the power goes to the heating element. It makes the hottest coffee of any maker I've ever used. The flask keeps coffee warm for hours, and it's not burnt and bitter from being on a heating plate.

A *good* cup is french press. A decent cup is the zojirushi. And a burr grinder is better than a blade grinder, but it's optional unless you want a fine grind for espresso, then get a burr.

Finally, keep your beans at room temp, but in a sealed container. As long as the package is sealed from when it's fresh out of the roaster, it'll keep indefinitely. Freezing reduces flavor. Buy fresh beans, not Starbucks shit. Buy a good brand. Peets is pretty good. Safeway blend is surprisingly good. I only pay more for specific beans and blends and roasts, once in a while. Stumptown and Blue Bottle and Dogtown are annoying hipster faggots, but they know their coffee, and it's worth buying sometimes, they're too pricey for every day.

Don't bother trying to make good espresso at home. Hint: you can't. You need equipment that's too expensive and requires a maintenance contract.

Source: family member owns a roasting company and cafe. I've forgotten more about coffee than I remember - but a basic cup ain't rocket science.

Kourig is shit coffee, period. It doesn't get hot enough, because of the UL requirements, and the water reservoir is a breeding ground for bacteria. The pods are shit.
