I've had some experience on the periphery of the entertainment industry and I've always been hyper-hyper aware of how fucking fake the edifice of television, film, advertising is. Like you say, it's all about image, or more specifically communicating a certain brand that is best suited to a target audience at a particular moment in time (re: Madonna, Prince, Katy Perry all permuting through different visual aesthetics and sounds) - that is unless you're Coldplay or AC/DC and gonna slam out the same shit for umpteenth decades.
