yeah but there's only one of those cats. There's an unlimited number of memes. Anyone can just pay the cost to upload a new graphic, even if it's the same one. You or whoever wrote this contract was too lazy to even include image md5's. It's just pointless.

Nope, you actually get a comparison telling you which one came first.
For example if someone uploaded basically the same pepe as you did it detects that and says 2nd is 50% original with 1 other before.

Well you cant, the whole thing is decentralized.
When you are checking originality you're doing it one by one directly with the contract.
You could change the data on your side but that would be only for yourself.
Similarity is calculated using a threshold on the string distance.
That is super effective for braille similarity where the same image on a small threshold change register as the same.
IE you could upload the same image and set a higher threshold(like say almost transparent) that would register as a different image but if the range is very close that would register as the same image.

Also, originality checks are static and will always result in the same value since it checks backwards on the meme index.
So new ones would be always checking on images that came before numerically.

I had that same problem during the EOS gas pump, sent like 6 tx making the contract and had to cancel them by changing the destination to my address and adding more gas.
Maybe you can try the same in the myetherwallet offline transaction.
