Users of the Ripple network are not required to use XRP as a store of value or a medium of exchange but can be used as a bridge currency if desired. It's the suggested bridge.

XLM is also native to the stellar network and the default medium of exchange to ensure there is always an exchange path between two currencies on the network - but it has a similar setup in that it isn't required to be used. But the stellar network has atomic pathfinding/atomic exchange of currencies to ensure that someone trading currencies gets the optimal path/exchange rate between the two which drives the native asset to be used.
