the various VIX ETFs are all made from about to expire OTM futures/options contracts. the only value left on them is the volatility aspects of their prices. hence, they are used to track volatility. the VIX doesnt constantly decline, it actually has a floor of about 9 (and more like 12 since february).

since the VIX itself doesnt have that built in decay by being made of expiring options, when i long vol, i buy calls on VIX (not UVXY). when im short vol, i buy puts on UVXY or VXX, as that way the decay works FOR me, not against me.

currently im doing both. im buying VIX calls at the ends of the day, and buying VXX puts to hedge. when vol goes down i sell my VXX puts and buy more calls. VIX never stays this low and next week is ER.
