Ok guys, so I did some iterations using MATLAB and assumed an interest rate of 4.45%, that she started paying off her debt after 4 years in college, that her total payment of $33685 was spread out evenly and that she didn't miss any payments.

This would mean by the time she started paying her debt was about $59,740.

The results turned out to be that she must have paid an average of $305 a month for 9.07 years to be left with $48k in debt.

Now even though I doubt she's been paying this for 9.07 years which would imply shes lying about something (most likely that she has $48k left) thats not the point.

The take away here is that if you're paying $305 a month on a $60k debt your a fucking moron and will be in debt forever.

Employees get paid a lower salary, the Government gets value out of the loans that were potentially going to be defaulted anyways, and government programs are more heavily staffed and funded (idk about other sectors but the judicial system is criminally unfunded).
