Why do employers care so much about a gap in employment? Why do they think that is their business?

It's depressing tbf. I was at work yesterday and asked my coworkers what they'd do if the won the lotto.

I said I'd travel, buy property, read, take Uni courses, play sports, go hunting, get fit, learn an instrument.

They said dumb shit like "buy a nice car" and then keep working.
