It's because the boomers are retiring. They are the largest voter bloc and so policy caters to them like it has in every other stage of their lives. Rugpulling the stock market and residential real estate at the same time will leave most boomers in the poorhouse and too old to earn it back, so we'll have 30 million seething zombies demanding that daddy gubmint triple their Social Security and Medicare to cover the losses, which would eat up just about 100% of the federal budget - the only way to deliver on that promise would be crippling austerity AND doubling taxes AND putting the printer in high gear.
