I would recommend turning this around a bit and sticking to "easy" investments. Pick % by taste.

X% bonds - pick countries you trust. Probably just get an ETF on these so you can distribute risk across everything.

There use to be a whole "stocks vs bonds" thing but in recent history they have followed each other's positions rather than reversed them, meaning in the old days you'd expect bonds to go up when stocks go down. Now it is probably more accurate to think of them as govt stonks.

X% Stocks, index tracking - usually would recommend this as bulk of savings. use a bogglehead "3 fund portfolio" to simulate entire economy

x% - Cash equivalent, high yield savings account, checking account. I'd recommend setting aside an emergency fund outside of these %'s that is a cash equivalent. After that you keep a certain % of your money as cash equivalent as a hedge against money increasing in value or stocks going through the floor. I wouldn't recommend keeping a large portion of money here as even high yield savings accounts will barely keep up with inflation in the pre money printer days. I'd also recommend considering how much you have in this asset class without thinking about it.

x% play money - The investments that should be a small % of your total. In fact I'd consider them one "play money category". BTC, STONKs you think are hot, wallstreetbets style options trading, rando commodities the late night tv guy sold you.

Oldfag 30 y/o boomer here. Been hodling since the great crash from $1k to $200. You zoomers need to calm down. This current market is hard to stomach, but if you get a couple of sips in you, step away from your blockfolio, and look to the future with a clear head then you'll see that the industry around cryptocurrency is going to continue to grow, and in turn, so should its value. The two big things to look out for is Lightening Network development and ETF approvals. The great surge of 2017 was during a time of Bitcoin largly only being accessable through exchanges like Coinbase and Gemini with slow, complicated verification procedures, and strict deposit/withdrawal limits. This, coupled with the scalability issues of Bitcoin causing high fees and slow transactions while the network was under stress created an environment for a bullrun that wasn't sustainable. Imagine having to spend $50 in fees and wait 14 hours to send btc from coinbase to your cold storage. ETFs and decentralized exchanges will make Bitcoin much more accessable, allowing for the possibility of more money entering the market like we previously haven't seen. This + the scalability issues that the Lightening Network is currently working to solve could easily be our ticket to Mars. There is already an industry growing around LN, and with each day development is advancing further and further. Just do your homework and keep an eye out for what people are working on. One promising project seems to be https://sparkswap.com.. I suspect there will be many more to come. Close that pink wojak folder and analyze the fundamentals of your investment. Do you see a future for it? Look beyond the red and the pink. We're all gonna make it /biz/bros, even some of you altcoiners. Don't lose your way on this ride we're about to take

18 yo here. I have these aspirations to found and run 3 big startup ideas to eventually become a multi-millionaire(yeah I know) so I could live a life of full luxury. Then I think about the boomer life of just having a big house, some land, loving wife and kids, a truck etc. Barbecuing and teaching my sons about life early on so they could become absolute chads early on.

That boomer life is basically plan b for me.

Your parents are likely using the word 'dividends' incorrectly
I'm guessing they used the gains from the recent bull market in the stock market to buy a car
classic boomer move

Also, look into moving your "target fund" to a high market cap index fund (S&P 500)
target funds have high fees and under perform indexes.
Retirement funds default to those so they can get more money.
