You're all ignoring another aspect. For example I am a codemonkey and I have to constantly widen my knowledge because new projects need completely new set of skills very often. Then there's the certifications you routinely have to take or renew, and the stuff you're supposed to know but you did years ago so you have to pick it up again. Then there's the usual stuff you think you know but keeps changing for no reason at all so you have to stay up to date with it. You don't have time for those things during work hours, so you end up wasting your evenings and your weekends just to stay afloat, basically giving up on any chance for social life because you barely have time for anything that isn't house chores and personal hygene. And if you're not an amerimutt you're not even being paid that well for this shit.
