I have the opportunity of making my dream of owning property come true. My parents want to give me $300k for my own place - I'm currently renting.

I don't know what to do because it's such a large sum of money. I live in Australia and you can't buy houses for that much unless they're out in the sticks or the outback. I'm thinking of getting a small apartment but I'm not sure whether it's a good investment long-term. It seems that apartments have all the cons of owning a house without any of the pros. I'm thinking of perhaps getting an OK-ish apartment as close to the city as possible and selling it as soon as I can move on.
