before nfts if you were an artist that made digital art (gifs, video art, jpegs) and wanted to sell it like you would a painting, it would be difficult. there is one video artist i was reading about who was talking about this how they had 3 billion views on their most popular gif on instagram over the last 5 yrs or something but they would have to sell their art as a file on a usb drive. even though people like the art nobody will buy that because the provenance is fucked. it cant be resold on secondary markets and it will be a pain for any buyer to know that it is the actual work of art with provenance and not a copy. not everyone necessarily cares about this and would just be happy to right click save or buy a poster of the mona lisa, but there are a lot of people who do care about it.
